Neither Heaven Nor Earth (2015)

Unable to explain this eerie phenomenon, the soldiers find themselves embroiled in an existential nightmare, desperate for their own safety.

Films involving some paranormal occurrence are often second-rate. But in this military themed film, there is nothing cheesy about the paranormal disappearances of both soldiers and Afghans.  What is palpable throughout is the increasingly desperate frustration of Captain Bonassieu (played by Jérémie Renier) and his men to explain what is happening.  Even if the solution suggested to the soldiers by a young Afghan shepherd seems implausible, it hardly matters to the story.  More important and really central to the drama is the mounting tension, its psychological effect on the troops, and how to explain the disappearances to their loved ones back home. Bonassieu’s final act of self-sacrifice is clever and unexpected.

Slow moving and clearly a genre that may not appeal to everyone, this film presents, nonetheless, a rather unique and possibly moving plot.

Offering some exciting, explicit sex scenes, this quasi-mystery story is based on a wildly unscientific premise.  In addition to the heavy erotic atmosphere, the film features the  beautiful Marine Vacth who pairs perfectly with the French start Jérémie Renier. Renier featured in “In Bruges”.

Visually, many scenes, especially in the museum, are quite striking and colorful.

Filmed in New Zealand (and supposedly taking place in Montana), Jane Campion’s mystery film ended with my saying “Whoa! What just happened?”  After sitting for awhile in a daze, I thought I finally figured out what was going on in the story.  To check my conclusion I googled for “The Power of the Dog” and discovered that my own reaction was typical for the film.  There are lots of discussions and explanations concerning the plot. To my satisfaction, I had correctly solved the whodunit. And not a word more from me about the details. (Out of desperation, you might read a review.)

Needless to say Benedict Cumberbatch (as the villain Phil Burbank) shows off his consistently amazing skill as an actor-chameleon.  Note that his American English is pitch perfect.

But credits are due also to:

  • Kirsten Dunst as Rose Gordon, the fragile wife of George Burbank.
  • Kodi Smit-McPhee as her son Peter Gordon.
  • Jesse Plemons as Phil’s soft-spoken but steady a rock brother George Burbank.

Be prepared for Phil’s nasty cruelty. Let me know if you solved the puzzle.

The Tender Bar (2022)

From Amazon Prime you can stream this gem of a film which lasts for 1 hour 46 minutes.

Ben Affleck’s resumé has seen its ups and downs, successes and embarrassing flops.  But with this wonderful film he has nailed a really memorable role.  Even one critic who found the film “bland” still conceded that Affleck (as Uncle George) delivered an excellent, terrific performance.

Although that Long Island neighborhood, home of a lot of foul-mouthed but warm-hearted men and women, was rougher than anything I ever experienced, nevertheless I admired their tight friendships.

Expect notable acting from:

  • Tye Sheridan as the young JR.  Naïve, plain looking, and hopelessly attracted to
  • Briana Middleton as Sidney. Did she ever love JR or was she looking for “experience” (as in “sex”)?
  • Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Sidney’s mother, whose sneering, smug, cruel treatment of JR left me boiling.
  • Daniel Ranieri as young JR.
  • Christopher Lloyd as Grandpa. “Don’t tell anybody I’m a good grandfather, everybody will want one.”
  • Lily Rabe as the  Mom whose life is centered on her son JR.
  • Max Martini as JR’s cringe-worthy drunk of a father.

In the IMDB entry for this movie, there is a sizeable user review that is much harder on the film than I have been. Still —

Glitch (2019)

From Netflix you can patiently (if that is possible in this sad case) stream 3 seasons of unreality. Each season contains 6 wonder-filled episodes of about 54 minutes length.

Succinctly put, these 18 episodes present almost acceptable nonsense for the truly bored.   Each of the “arisen” was murdered in his or her former life and have been given a chance to discover the murderer and to right past wrongs.  At least at first my attention was fixated on amending past injustice. In addition, there are actually some small patches of good acting and character interaction. Unfortunately there was an equal amount of really bad, maudlin (i.e. weeping) acting. As time wore on, good guys became bad guys and sometime became good guys again. Moreover when the plot devolved into the hero-villains trying to save the universe from ending,  I almost threw in the towel. For better or worse I persisted to the end. Now I have to find another trash series.

Waste no time on this clunker.

Prepare to be possibly as confused as poor Linda. Sandra Bullock (as Linda Hanson) lives a week’s days out of order.  Before disaster strikes (or maybe afterwards) she tries valiantly to figure out what is happening.  It doesn’t help that her husband Julian McMahon (as Jim Hanson) keeps dying or disappearing and then reappearing.

Sandra Bullock started appearing in comedy films. She then switched to serious roles. While nothing especially memorable, I have yet to see one of her films that I did not enjoy, including this particular movie.

Forget some technical flaws (see IMDB for a list of the goofs), and just enjoy.

Paul Freeman, who plays Ray,  is one of those supporting British actors you seem to have seen everywhere but just cannot place. If it helps, in “Monarch of the Glen” he played Andrew Booth. His resume is enormous.  Ray exudes a restless, vigorous, energy overshadowed by events in his past.

No less impressive is the resume of Alun Armstrong, who plays Jim. Jim’s character is sadder as a man who attended a school and then stayed on for the rest of his working life, Now he leaves that part of his life full of regret that he has never really lived.  He feels duty bound to go back home and care for his ailing, elderly father. But the father wants Jim to move on.

As a realistic British drama with wonderful acting, DO NOT MISS!

Don’t Look Up (2021)

According to Miriam-Webster, “allegory” is a story in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for ideas about human life or for a political or historical situation.  In the case of this film, the news that a comet hurtling toward earth will destroy mankind, which a superficial world treats as “fake news” could possibly stand for climate warming (which the Master of the Republican party declared was simply a “Chinese hoax”) or for a pandemic (Why get vaccinated against some illness that will disappear in a day or so?).

Leonardo DiCaprio provides a splendid performance as Dr. Randall Mindy, an all too human scientist trying to warn the world but who succumbs to his sudden fame and the allures of the unbalanced Brie Evantee (played by Cate Blanchette).

Jennifer Lawrence plays an increasingly frustrated and exasperated Kate Dibiasky, Dr. Mindy’s gifted doctoral student.

As far as an over the top  (if not to say bizarre)  role as President Orlean of the USA  goes,  Meryl Streep is the perfect “air head.” She even wears a MAGA cap.

When the screen finally goes black, do not stop watching.  Credits rolling by on the screen are interrupted several times by continuations of the story.  Watch the fatalistic silliness right up to the very end.

Is this depiction of a threatened end of the world really a comedy?

Demoted (2012)

Today it seems there are no holds barred on what salacious things you can say out loud in a film.  Needless to say the film was rated Restricted for crude (to say the least) language.

David Cross, who played Tobias Funke in “Arrested Development”, was the only actor I recognized. As a hapless villain he is quite successful.

If nothing else recommends the film, at least it is funny and has a happy, sappy ending.

D’Agostino (2012)

This macabre tale follows Allan’s attempts to mold D’Agostino into the perfect pet. Domesticating D’Agostino and keeping him secret from the outside proves increasingly difficult and Allan quickly finds himself in way over his head with man’s best friend.

From Kanopy you can stream this 125 minute complete film.  Kanopy seems like the site to visit for really unusual productions.

Bizarre, difficult to categorize, possibly off-putting are a few adjectives that quickly come to mind with regard to this very strange film.

Be prepared to watch a nude man on a leash being treated like a pet dog for almost all of the movie.  In addition be prepared for a really chilling plot twist that ends the story.
