Reckless (2014)

From Netflix:

A gorgeous Northern legal eagle and a charming Southern lawyer clash in and out of the courtroom in this soapy drama set in Charleston, S.C.

Looking for a worthwhile soap opera? Try this 2014 TV series featuring beautiful Anna Wood as Yankee lawyer Jamie Sawyer versus handsome Cam Gigandet as Charleston native lawyer Roy Rader. These two smart people are always opposing lawyers (who help each other). Of course, as is often the case in soap operas, the question is: when will these two finally get together?

An entire year’s series is spent trying to answer that question. Meanwhile each episode features one trial plus a continuation of the efforts by Georgina Haig as fired policewoman Lee Anne Marcus who is suing the police department for defamation of character and unwarranted dismissal. In addition there is a continuing investigation into police gun smuggling.

First the good news: This is an easy to watch romantic soap opera. Now the bad news: For some reason that outraged fans, CBS cancelled the show after only one season. Here is a series that cries for more episodes, especially considering the final plot twist and the fact that Roy and Jamie _ _ _ get together. Here I leave it to you to fill in the _ _ _ blanks with “do” or “do not”.

No spoilers allowed! Have fun!

Dicte (2013)

From Netflix:

A crime reporter starts a new life by returning to her hometown, where she finds herself at odds with the police when she tries to solve their cases.

UPDATE: From MHz Choice you can now stream 3 seasons of Dicte. The stories and writing continue to be captivating and suspense filled. Currently (January 2020) there is a new episode of season 3 released each Tuesday.

OLD REVIEW ————————————————————-

No doubt about it, streaming is taking over. Just today (Dec 9,2014) the papers echo complaints that Netflix streaming is threatening cable TV. No surprise there seeing how cable offerings continue to worsen.

From Netflix I streamed 10 wonderful episodes of the only season made of the Swedish thriller “Dicte”. If you loved the Swedish “Wallander” you will be ecstatic over “Dicte”. Dicte is the character name of the lead actress who is a newspaper crime reporter dedicated to uncovering the truth often by using methods not legally available to the police.

More than crime solving, the series is equally if not more concerned with the personal lives of Dicte and all the people surrounding her. In this respect you can call it a melodrama. Expect to see married couples break up, exchange partners, and so forth: today’s operative word is “blended”.

As with “Wallander” the sound track is in Swedish with English subtitles.

DO NOT MISS either “Wallander” or “Dicte”!

The Giver (2014)

From Netflix:

In a future society called The Community, pain, war and disease have been eradicated, as have individuality and free will. When a teenager named Jonas learns the truth about the real world, he must decide whether to reveal all or remain quiet.

Let’s have three cheers for population mind control!

Good visuals, clever use of color, and a few thought-provoking ideas make this sci-fi film watchable.

Jeff Bridges is the Giver and looks a lot like Jeff Bridges. Meryl Streep’s appearance is appropriate and not what she usually looks like. We can suppose that neither of these two well-know actors would appear in a film that was not in some way worthwhile (unless they really needed the money).

Don’t forget “Logan’s Run”, “Brave New World”, “THX 1138”, “Fahrenheit 451” and other similar pseudo-utopian presentations.

‘Nuff said!

Chinatown (1974)

From Netflix:

With a suspicious femme fatale bankrolling his snooping, private eye J.J. Gittes uncovers intricate dirty dealings in the Los Angeles waterworks and gets his nose slashed for his trouble in director Roman Polanski’s complex neonoir classic.

Thanks to fellow Movie Fan Beverly for suggesting “Two Jakes” which is a sequel to “Chinatown”. First, therefore I re-watched “Chinatown” which is indeed a classic from 40 years ago.

During filming Jack Nichols was a very young-looking 37 year old and Faye Dunaway was a stunning 33 year old. In the sequel “Two Jakes” Nichols is 16 years older and looks more like the Jack Nichols that I for one remember. In this film the famous John Huston is a very effective and evil 68 years old villain.

Please read the Wikipedia account which treats not only the water history of Los Angeles but also, and more importantly, how the director Roman Polanski changed the original ending to the final very memorable version that we see in the film (spoilers not allowed).

Many older films seem dated. However, despite the older setting (styles, phones, cars, etc) this classic holds up well and can be very emotionally affecting.

Watch this great film before seeing “Two Jakes”.

Words and Pictures (2013)

From Netflix:

A picture is worth a thousand words — or is it? That’s the question prep school students must answer as their teachers egg them on in this diverting romantic comedy starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche as the instructors who spark the debate.

Finally, a date movie without cringing. Ever beautiful Juliette Binoche as the art teacher and ever devilish Clive Owen as the creative writing teacher not only battle through an entire film with fun multi-syllabic word challenges but also engage their respective students in a competition of words versus pictures. Each has problems: she has serious rheumatoid arthritis and he is an alcoholic plagiarist. Will he keep his teaching job and not alienate his son? Will she be able to continue teaching and painting? Stay tuned.

Sometimes the dialog is not appropriate for children.

And by the way, it is also a love story which you might as well enjoy.

Hateship Loveship (2013)

From Netflix:

Hired to look after an elderly man and his teenage granddaughter, a dowdy caretaker finds herself drawn to the girl’s ne’er-do-well father, never realizing that the subversive teen has been sending her tender e-mails in her father’s name.

Because the film starred Guy Pearce (whose films are usually very good) I took a chance on this film and won the raffle! Small gems such as this are rare finds.

Of course Guy Pearce does well. But the absolute star of the show was Kristen Wiig (young Lucille Bluth in “Arrested Development”) as the character Johanna Parry. Here is a woman who, as far as I can recall, never smiles in the film. Instead she is this determined, stoic, practical, hard-working, and lonely young woman who despite seemingly hopeless circumstances sets her sight on what she wants. Sometimes her doggedness seems a bit unrealistic, but let us remain optimists.

Nick Nolte (who is now 73 years old) plays a wonderful grandfather. In case you are wondering where you have seen her, his eventual girlfriend Eileen is played by Christine Lahti who portrayed Executive A.D.A> Sonya Paxton in “Law and Order”.

But hats off to the two high school girls Hailee Steinfeld as the granddaughter Sabitha and Sami Gayle (Nicky Reagan-Boyle in “Blue Bloods”) as mean-girl Edith. Sabitha is the lonely, sad, insecure, and vulnerable daughter of Guy Pearce (character Ken). In “Blue Bloods” Sami Gayle as Nicky is sweet and mature. In this film Sami Gayle is perfect as the prototypical high school bitch. Look for two moments: At one point Edith’s sex buddy points out that what she is doing is mean and she pauses only for a moment before continuing in her meddling; At the end of the film she is jabbering on about how wonderful her life will be while trying to ignore Johanna’s accusing stares.

In the small gem category I nominate this film as a DO NOT MISS!

Winter’s Tale (2014)

From Netflix;

Mark Helprin’s novel provides the basis for this film starring Colin Farrell as a thief who breaks into an ill girl’s home and then falls for her. As the action shifts between past and present, the burglar also acquires a flying-horse guardian angel.

Possibly because we had just returned from our daughter’s castle wedding in Ireland, the Irish brogues spoken in this film were music to my ears. We are used to hearing Colin Farrell (as Peter Laks) speaking brogue but this is the first time I have heard Russell Crowe (as the daemon Pearly Soames) also using an Irish brogue. Crowe makes a convincing villain.

Herein is a fantasy fairy-tale for adults. Just when things are going badly, up pops yet another miracle. Sometimes this magic realism seems comical without intending to be funny. Expect some corny dialog.

Will Smith is an unconvincing Lucifer.

Among older actors we find William Hurt. But the biggest such surprise was the “Adult Willa” played by none other than Eva Marie Saint (Edie Doyle in “On the Waterfront”) who is now 90 years old.

Would someone please tell Colin Farrell to get and keep a decent hair cut?

Remember now – it’s all a bit silly.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006)

From Netflix:

Fed up with his manipulative girlfriend, Jenny Johnson (Uma Thurman), New Yorker Matt Saunders (Luke Wilson) gives her the heave-ho and moves on with his life, leaving the heartbroken Jenny — aka G-girl — to do everything within her superpowers to humiliate Matt. Anna Faris, Rainn Wilson and Eddie Izzard co-star in director Ivan Reitman’s slapstick fantasy comedy about a bitter superwoman scorned.

In a moment of TV Wasteland desperation, Kathy and I happened upon this comedy on one of our many HBO channels. Kathy sniffed in disdain and then joined me in laughing at some of the great sight gags. To be sure, this is a B-film which can be silly, vulgar, corny, and still funny enough to be worth the watch.

Much of the humor centers around sex (shocking, right?). Sex with a powerful super hero woman anyone ? Sex while flying in the sky anyone ? What’s not to like ?

Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, and Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute of “The Office”) are featured in the cast.

Have some off-color fun!

Trouble with the Curve (2012)

From Netflix:

Slowed by age and failing eyesight, crack baseball scout Gus Lobel takes his grown daughter along as he checks out the final prospect of his career. Along the way, the two renew their bond, and she catches the eye of a young player-turned-scout.

Gather the family for a feel-good Clint Eastwood film. What easily could have been an overly sentimental film is kept in check with good directing.

If there is a bad-guy in the story, it is Matthew Lillard who plays Phillip Sanderson, the character out to get the aging Clint Eastwood’s job. Everyone else is friendly and supportive. Feel-good films have those goose-flesh moments in which “truth” is vindicated (somewhat like hearing “The Lone Ranger ?!?!”). For those moments pay attention to the snotty new baseball talent and the peanut seller.

Lots of old-timers (Clint Eastwood, George Wyner, Bob Gunton, Robert Patrick, and John Goodman, to name a few) fill out the ranks. Among younger actors count Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams.

For what it is worth, Clint Eastwood’s son Scott (Officer Jim Barnes of “Chicago P.D.”) has a minor role.

Watching this film is wholesome time well-spent.

Divergent (2014)

From Netflix:

Born into a civilization in the distant future, Beatrice is a teenager who learns that her unique cognitive skills make her useful to the authorities. Over time she discovers that she’s a Divergent, and thus slated for elimination by the government.

Another action packed “good guys” versus “bad guys” film populated by zillions of teenagers (or am I just getting older?). Some of the few recognizable older actors are:

  • Ashley Judd (Tris’ mother)
  • Tony Goldwyn (Tris’ father)
  • Kate Winslet (the scheming Erudite)

More than likely Theo James (who plays Four) will do well in films.

Don’t get me wrong: the plot is well constructed, the theme is somewhat thought-provoking (Do we conform, or do we think for ourselves?), the love story is sensitively done, and there is plenty of action to keep you excited. It always amazes me what good shooters the good guys seem to be. Kick boxing anyone?

Have fun.
