Just Friends (2005)

From NetFlix:

After being snubbed by his high school crush (Amy Smart), a nice guy (Ryan Reynolds) moves to Los Angeles, where he blossoms into a womanizing music exec. But when he’s stranded in his New Jersey hometown, he runs into his former love and is completely floored by her. Again. Reynolds donned heavy makeup and a fat suit to play the ex-dork who reconnects with the girl who broke his heart in this romantic comedy about big-time attraction.

We have seen Ryan Reynolds in some minor supporting roles, in some serious dramas, but he excels in comedy. He seems to be the next generation after Steve Martin. His timing, facial expressions, and physical movements are tuned to perfection. This movie made me laugh throughout. Call it a chick-flick if you will, but it is a relief to relax and enjoy this romp after watching more serious and difficult films.

Warning: The first part in which Ryan is an overweight high school student is only so-so. After that introduction the film improves.

Probably the sex talk excludes children.

Bent (1997)

From NetFlix:

In this drama based on the play by Martin Sherman (who also wrote the screenplay), a Berlin homosexual is caught up in the Nazi hysteria during World War II. After being forced to kill his lover, he’s placed in a concentration camp and lies to get himself classified as Jewish rather than gay. But several rule-breaking incidents and his love for a fellow male prisoner bring him to admit his true nature. Mick Jagger appears briefly as a drag queen.

If you see this film before you watch “Walk On Water” you might appreciate the second film more. “Bent” offers a unique view of Nazi cruelty, especially as directed towards homosexuals. This view couples well with “Walk On Water”.

I watched this film because I was trying to find films with Clive Owen. “Bent” only increases my appreciation of his acting skill. He is willing to take unusual, possibly controversial roles. I only hope he resists the temptation to which Anthony Hopkins succumbed, namely taking stupid roles in order to make money. Sadly, “Duplicity” comes close to that mistake.

This could be a difficult film for you to watch because:

  • Initial scenes show decadent public entertainment in Berlin including explicit homosexual activity. Indeed Berlin at that time in history was very decadent.
  • When the two male lovers are first captured, they are put on a train to Dachau in which the goal was to break their spirit and hopefully eliminate them before they arrived at Dachau. One of the partners is brutally tortured and Clive Owen is forced to deny he knows the victim and must beat that victim who is thrown bodily off the train.
  • The officers insist that Clive Owen perform straight sex on a 12 year old girl who is in fact dead during the encounter. The German officers laugh and have a gay old time.
  • In prison Clive finds a new gay acquaintance Horst. The two are forced to repetitive, meaningless hard labor moving rocks back and forth.
  • Needless to say, they cannot touch one another. At one point they verbally work thru a sexual encounter in which each achieves orgasm. It proves to them that they are still alive.
  • All along Clive managed to be classified as Jewish as opposed to gay. Toward the end of the film the officers cruelly kill Horst and ask Clive to dispose of the body.

As a side note on hypocrisy, many Nazis (some of them leaders such as Roehm) were openly homosexual. You can find an enlightening article on Homosexuality in the Nazi Party.

Jude Law, Mick Jagger, and others have cameo roles. I challenge you to spot Jude Law.

The music, believe it or not, was written by Philip Glass. He must have been very young because the music is beautiful.

If you can stomach the harsh details and try to ignore them, you will watch a story of a guilty man finally forgiving himself and admitting of love. Do NOT expect a happy ending.

Chaos Theory (2007)

From NetFlix:

Thanks to a strict regimen of timetables, to-do lists and index cards, efficiency expert Frank Allen (Ryan Reynolds) lives his life exactly how he wants it. That is, until his well-meaning wife (Emily Mortimer) decides to set their clock back a mere 10 minutes. Suddenly, Frank’s once-safe and predictable life is spinning dangerously out of control … which is the one thing he never bothered to plan for. Stuart Townsend and Sarah Chalke co-star.

Don’t expect much. This mediocre melodrama rates a C. There are some genuine laughs. And the story has some original twists. The language is at times crude enough to exclude children.

Deception (2008)

From NetFlix:

Unassuming accountant Jonathan McQuarry (Ewan McGregor) thinks he’s hit the big time when a lawyer friend (Hugh Jackman) introduces him to an exclusive sex club. But McQuarry’s life begins to unravel when he falls for a woman at the club and is later linked to her disappearance. Michelle Williams, Natasha Henstridge and Charlotte Rampling also star in this atmospheric thriller from director Marcel Langenegger (in his big-screen debut).

Hugh Jackman redeems himself despite his appearance in the adolescent film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. In this film Jackman makes a great villain. You might also want to see him in “Australia”. He and Ewan McGregor make perfect foils for each other’s character. I will not say a word about the really clever plot because plot is everything. Of course there is the sex club and lots of sex scenes, but do not avoid the film because you think the film is just about sex. The nice thing about the plot is that while tricky it is not too complicated.

Definitely, Maybe (2008)

From NetFlix:

Interested in knowing how her divorcing parents met, young Maya (Abigail Breslin) listens as her dad, Will (Ryan Reynolds), recounts his romantic past with three different and special women: Emily (Elizabeth Banks), April (Isla Fisher) and Summer (Rachel Weisz) — leaving Maya to guess which one is her mom. Kevin Kline makes an appearance in writer-director Adam Brooks’s tender tale of father-daughter bonding and lost love.

You may remember Abigail Breslin as “Little Miss Sunshine”. She is also perfect for this easy-to-watch Chick Flick. Ryan Reynolds you may remember from “The Proposal”. Kathy and I watched all three “date films”. “Little Miss Sunshine” and “The Proposal” are both better than “Definitely, Maybe” in our opinion. The character Will dates so many women that not only can the plot be confusing at times, but his daughter even calls him a “slut”. In fact, except for very explicit and oft-repeated sexual terminology this could be an OK film for all ages. What does sparkle are a lot of snappy retorts. Now why can’t I think of such funny comebacks ?

The Proposal (2009)

From NetFlix:

When she learns that she’s in danger of losing her visa status and being deported back to her native Canada, overbearing book editor Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) forces her put-upon assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), to marry her. Directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), this romantic comedy also stars Craig T. Nelson and Mary Steenburgen as Andrew’s parents, Joe and Grace, and Betty White as the outspoken Grandma Annie.

Kathy and I watched this film at her request. We both laughed ourselves silly. It is a typical Sandra Bullock romantic comedy and the usual amount of fun. Of course there are parts that are maudlin or unbelieveable. And we could have done without the male strip dancer at ladies night. But the ensemble work between Bullock and Reynolds is for this genre just about perfect.

Historical notes:

  • Sandra Bullock (born 1964, Arlington VA) at this writing is 45 years old and still holding her own.
  • Ryan Reynolds (born 1976 Vancouver BC) is 33 and stars in the film “Fireflies in the Garden”.
  • Mary Steenburgen (born 1953, Arkansas) is 56 and is married to Ted Danson of “Cheers” fame.
  • Craig Nelson (born 1944 Spokane) is 65 and is in many films as well as “CSI:NY”.
  • Betty White (born 1922 Illinois) is 87 and still thriving. She was one of the “Golden Girls”. But I always remember her as Sue Ann Nivens from the “Mary Tyler Moore” TV show (1973-1977). Look her up in IMDB to see an unbelievable list of appearances.

There is innocent nudity and sexual frankness, so maybe not for childern. But all in all just a lot of fun.

The Brothers Bloom (2008)

From NetFlix:

The Brothers Bloom made a name for themselves as the world’s best con men. Now, the younger (Adrien Brody) is ready to retire on the millions the pair has swindled. But when his brother (Mark Ruffalo) lures him into one last job, he reluctantly agrees. What he hasn’t counted on, though, is falling for their mark, an adventure-seeking heiress (Rachel Weisz). Robbie Coltrane and Babel’s Rinko Kikuchi co-star.

Yet another “who’s conning whom ?” film. At times was slow (boring ?). But there were so many wonderful sight gags that I just burst out laughing. If you are a busy person, there are better choices than this B-film.

Play Misty for Me (1971)

From NetFlix:

Silver-tongued radio disc jockey Dave (Clint Eastwood) can’t help but notice the persistent calls from a female to “play ‘Misty’ for me.” But when a chance meeting with infatuated fan Evelyn leads to a brief and steamy love affair, Dave quickly learns he’s in for more than a little night music. Evelyn will stop at nothing — even the return of one of Dave’s old flames — to have him all to herself. The film marks Eastwood’s directorial debut.

1971 was a long time ago (38 years ago to be exact). Recently I reviewed “Gran Torino”, another Clint Eastwood film. His voice today is really rough but back in the day he had a silver whisper voice. And of course, his looks have changed a bit. This stalker film predates the stalker film of all times, “Fatal Attraction”. Techniques have evolved. Whereas this film has a “happy ?” ending, today the stalker would cleverly frame the stalkee for some crime and destroy the life of the stalkee, or something equally dreary. An awful lot of film footage was wasted by today’s standards. You spend too much time walking through a dark room waiting for someone to pounce. You have to sit through some on-stage musicians that have nothing to do with the plot. For 1971 the really beautiful naked love scene in the forest pond was probably quite daring. Finally, the stalker (Jessica Walter) was the best actor in the film, although not quite Glenn Close.

The Secret Life of Words (2005)

From NetFlix:

After surviving the war in Yugoslavia, taciturn nurse Hanna (Sarah Polley) heads to Ireland for some rest and relaxation. But when she hears about an oil-rig accident off the coast, she agrees to tend heroic burn victim Josef (Tim Robbins). Personalities clash aboard the derrick as Hanna contends with Josef, a Russian soldier (Sverre Anker Ousdal), a lively Spanish chef (Javier Cámara) and other oddballs in this compelling character study.

Where to begin with this superb but disturbing film ?

If anything, this is a story of a severly damaged woman little by little returning to life due to her nursing the burn survivor Tim Robbins on the almost deserted oil-rig. It is also the story of his gradual return to life physically and mentally. His character has a wonderful talent for words. From the very outset he is determined to break through Hanna’s defenses, initially just because he is a very accomplished flirt. Both he and she have some horrible history which eventually emerges.

Some of the other actors are notable. I won’t say what role she plays (it is part of the mystery surrounding Hanna) but Julie Christie is still a beautiful woman with those startling blue eyes. It took me awhile to place the cook Jose Cámara. He was one of the men who was a caretaker for a comatose girl friend in the Almodóvar film “Hable Con Ella”.

I have some nitpiks: It would have been impossible in my opinion for the burn victim to have located Julie Christie’s character. Also Kathy and I found the ending to be too good to be true.

Challenge: Who or what was the childlike voice narrator ?

The next paragraph is a spoiler, but I owe it to you. WARNING: if vivid descriptions of war atrocities bother you, do NOT watch this film.

Torchwood (2006)

From NetFlix:

In this series that spun off from “Doctor Who,” policewoman Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) stumbles upon a secret organization known as Torchwood, a clandestine group led by the mysterious Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) that monitors alien activity on Earth. Cooper soon joins Harkness, tech expert Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori) and medic Owen Harper (Burn Gorman) in their quest to protect Earth from invasion.

OK all you kids out there, if you liked either “Doctor Who” or “Lost” or “X-Files” and are into a lot of sex (and some violence) this is a TV series for you. You don’t have to know anything about “Doctor Who”, you just need to have that mindset. Certain characters are straight and others are gay and some few seem not to have made up their minds just yet. Start with Season One and work your way through Season Two and Season Three.

Season One

Nothing more than acceptable trash, this TV series can still be fun to watch. To give you a taste of the kind of nonsense involved, consider: An alien has come to Earth in search of orgasmic energy (yes, that is correct). This alien enters the body of a young woman who then serially attracts male sex partners. But as each young man reaches climax he turns into a small pile of dust. In time there is a trail of small piles of dust. Heard enough ?

As I recall, the last disk (7?) of Season One is not episodes, but rather extra commentary. You might not want to waste a rental on this last disc.

Season Two

Every review I read says that Season Two is better and I agree. Some episodes are stupid. But for the most part the plots are clever and varied. More interesting is that mixed in with all the nonsense are valid situations applicable to real life. For example, the fiancee of one couple has to keep her membership in Torchwood secret from her boy friend. He feels neglected, etc. etc. Sound familiar ?

Torchwood actually kills its characters permanently. The joke (ahem, important feature), however, is that Jack Harkness is condemned to live forever young. Many episodes kill him in all sorts of diabolical ways and he just keeps coming back for more. You really don’t believe I am saying this, right ?

Besides, when have you ever been to a wedding in which the bride is unfortunately pregnant with an alien whose mother alien is at the wedding in disguise waiting to nab the baby alien ?

Season Three

Season Three is one long multi-part story “Children of the Earth”. Aliens have come to earth. These aliens truly can destroy the earth at their whim. We are defenseless. The aliens demand that we give them ten percent of all the children of the earth (never mind why – you have to watch the show). What do you suppose the British politicians do in such a desperate situation ? What would you do ?

No one over the mental age of, say, 16 need apply. So why on earth am I watching this garbage ? That’s easy …

I LOVE TRASH !
