All About Steve (2009)

From Amazon Prime:

The Proposal’s Sandra Bullock, Oscar nominee Thomas Haden Church, and The Hangover’s Bradley Cooper star in a hilarious tale of a woman who, after falling hard for a guy, thinks they’re an item; unfortunately, he thinks she’s stalking him!

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1 hour 38 minute comedy film. Hurry, because this riot of a film leaves Amazon on November 1, 2021.

Sandra Bullock’s Mary Horowitz creates crossword puzzles for a newspaper. She is a walking and constantly talking encyclopedia of assorted factoids. Her script must have been difficult to memorize because it truly is non-stop and exhausting to hear, let alone recite.

What makes the film fun to watch are the pratfalls.  Ignore the beginning encounter between Mary and Bradley Cooper’s Steve in his auto where Mary naively throws herself at Steve, because that is not in keeping with the rest of the film.

Both Kathy and I could not stop laughing.

Post Mortem: No One Dies In Skarnes (2021)

From IMDB:

Live Hallangen is declared dead but hours later she suddenly wakes up with a sudden urge for blood. Meanwhile, her brother Odd tries to keep the family driven funeral home afloat.

From Netflix:

It’s just another average day in this small Norwegian town
until a young woman is found dead in a field. But things are not as they seem.

From Netflix you can stream 6 episodes of this Norwegian series. Each episode lasts about 44 minutes.

Categories such as comedy, drama, and thriller have been applied to this off-beat series.  If I tell you what the series is about, I am afraid you will not watch it.  Let me begin, therefore,  by saying that no matter the theme, this is NOT a vampire story.   More than any other characterization,  for me “comedy” rings true because it shows Live (pronounced Lee-Va ), her brother Odd, the policeman Reinert. and Dr. Sverre getting in deeper and deeper in their combined efforts to conceal the truth about them and the strange secret of the town of Skarnes while trying desperately to keep the chief of police, Judith, off their trail.  Some comedies such as this one are built on a succession of outrageous events. When was the last time you saw a completely clothed woman having a mud fist fight with a completely naked man with a plastic bag tied over his head?

Well done and well worth the watch.

Inherent Vice (2014)

From Kanopy you can stream this 149 minute feature film.  Kanopy’s own summary is:

Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, There Will Be Blood, Magnolia, Boogie Nights) reteams with The Master star Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Her, Walk the Line) for this darkly comic adaptation of the 2009 Thomas Pynchon novel, set in late-sixties Los Angeles. When private eye Doc Sportello’s ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say. It’s the tail end of the psychedelic ’60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that “love” is another of those words going around at the moment, like “trip” or “groovy,” that’s being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

If you enjoy period pieces you will enjoy watching  bearded Joaquin Phoenix cleverly disguised as a hippy private investigator.  Consider the impressive list of actors:

Benicio Del ToroJena MaloneJoanna NewsomJoaquin PhoenixJosh BrolinKatherine WaterstonMartin ShortOwen WilsonReese Witherspoon.

Slow, complicated, and historic.  Many references to the Vietnam period politics (Nixon, etc). Very frank sexual discussions and situations  accompanied by full nudity.

Probably not for everyone.

Nice Package (2016)

From IMDB:

A wannabe professional thief, his gay best friend, a sexy hostage, some thugs and a mystery package everyone wants.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1 hour 38 minute complete film.

If vulgarity, goofy characters, tongue-in-cheek violence, satiric sex scenes, and absurd conversations are your thing, this barely acceptable trash will hopefully provide you with some laughs.

Motto: I LOVE TRASH!

Alaska Is A Drag (2017)

From Netflix:

Tormented by bullies, an aspiring drag star working at an Alaskan cannery becomes a skilled fighter and is tapped for competition by a boxing coach.

From Netflix you can stream this really offbeat complete film that lasts 1 hour 23 minutes.

From IMDB:

Tough, but diva fabulous, Leo, an aspiring drag superstar, is stuck working in a fish cannery in Alaska. He and his twin sister are trapped in the monotony of fist fights and fish guts. Out of necessity, Leo learned to fight back, which catches the attention of the local boxing coach. When a new boy moves to town and wants to be his sparring partner, Leo has to face the real reason he’s stuck in Alaska.

Black brother and sister Leo and Tristen are in real life also brother and sister.  Tristen is battling cancer. White Declan, the newcomer, is straight where as Leo is clearly gay. Ignore, if you will, the drag theme.  More to the point is a friendship forged by loneliness.  Most of the violence stems from the fact that  Leo’s previous boyfriend Kyle, although married to a pregnant wife, is intensely jealous of Declan.

Offbeat is putting it mildly: a talented boxer and drag queen ?!? But actually it is a well-done heartfelt drama.

Schitts Creek (2018)

From IMDB:

When rich video-store magnate Johnny Rose and his family suddenly find themselves broke, they are forced to leave their pampered lives to regroup in Schitt’s Creek.

From Netflix:

After their business manager loots their family fortune, the Rose family relocates to the town of Schitt’s Creek, which they once bought as a joke.

From Netflix you can stream 4 seasons of this nutty series. Each season has 13 episodes. Every episode lasts for 21 minutes except that in season 4 episodes 7 through 12 last 22 minutes and episodes 13 (the finale of the 4 seasons) lasts 25 minutes.

Only for special streaming offerings do I apply the category “Barely Acceptable Trash”.  If ever there was a series that deserved such an accolade, this series hits the target. Of course, the title probably is a bit of a hint.

In addition I have invented the category “Exaggeration Comedy” to prepare you for utter and fun nonsense. Guarantee: you will either love or hate (i.e. probably be offended by) this offering.

All the actors are well chosen. Consider a few of the regretfully  unforgettable characters:

  •   Father Johnny Rose is a suited, never wrong, oblivious bungler.
  •  Mother Moira Rose never wears the same outfit twice (just as does the villain in “What/If”). Each outfit she wears is purposely an exaggerated, outrageous spectacle. Also in each appearance she wears a different wig from her wig wall. Ignore the fact that the family has supposedly lost all their money, are living in two rooms, and yet Moira has some 52 different outfits (in addition to her wig wall)!
  •  Daughter  Alexis Rose minces her way through all the series. There is hardly a moment that she doesn’t speak and move in an affected, cutesy way.  Probably at first you may find her constant mannerisms annoying.
  •  Son David Rose, as far as his mannerisms go, is a carbon copy of his sister. David is bisexual although he spends most of the series being gay.
  •  Patrick Brewer and David open a store selling pampered people personal products. Eventually they are gay lovers. Patrick is the perfect sensible, open, sincere, normal foil to David’s personal style.
  •  Roland Schitt is the mayor of Schitt’s Creek. He is played by Chris Elliott. Just in case you can’t place his face, recall that in “Everybody Loves Raymond” Raymond’s brother marries a girl whose parents are religious fundamentalists and whose brother Peter MacDougall is a total annoying loser. Chris Elliott played that brother in “Raymond”. Is that paunch which Chris sports in “Schitt’s Creek” for real?

Why on earth would I waste my time watching this dysfunctional family at work?  Well, at the end of day, lying in bed, and not wanting to think a single rational thought, these episodes are a hoot. And you must remember:

I LOVE TRASH!

Dead to Me (2019)

From IMDB:

A series about a powerful friendship that blossoms between a tightly wound widow (Applegate) and a free spirit with a shocking secret.

From Netflix you can stream 10 half hour episodes of this Netflix original TV series.

Before going any further, let me assure you this series is very profane acceptable trash.

Who on earth thinks of such crazy plots full of surprises? In this case the answer is Liz Feldman. Her story line often caught me unaware and forced some real belly laughs.

Jen Harding (played by Christina Applegate) is in mourning because her late husband Ted was killed in a hit and run auto accident. Judy Hale (played by Linda Cardellini) was driving the car accompanied by her boy friend Steve Wood (played by James Marsden).   Judy wanted to call the police but Steve convinced her to hide the damaged car and keep the incident secret. Judy then spends 10 episodes trying to make Jen’s life happy.  Along the way all kinds of often funny difficulties pop up.

Feldman’s plot ends with a question mark that could conceivably lead to a second season. Hopefully that second season would be just as much fun.

The Dressmaker (2015)

From IMDB:

A glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 2 hour film.

Revenge is the keyword in this Australian comedy-drama. Wikepedia offers you more than you probably want to know about this film. Equally important is the ever present theme of haute couture.   It stars Kate Winslet as a femme fatale in the titular role of the dressmaker, Myrtle “Tilly” Dunnage, who returns to a small Australian town to take care of her ailing, mentally unstable mother, played by Judy Davis.  Along the way we encounter a love affair, false accusations of murder, and (did we forget to mention ?) revenge.

Sometimes the acting is over the top if not downright corny. But the visual fun of the film is the outrageous cast of  characters: the policeman is a cross-dresser, Judy Davis is a positive wreck, several women are timid and unattractive until Tilly takes charge. Three quarters through the story we think we see a happy ending … but then suddenly — (you will just have to watch the film!)

Even though I would give the film a B+,  I enjoyed every minute. Visually the oddities and clothing transformations are fun to watch and the story for all its faults is engrossing.

Good Night Darling (2009)

From  MHz Choice:

A struggling musician tries his hand at blackmail after inadvertently filming a murder in this dark and quirky three-part miniseries based on the novel by Norwegian author Fredrik Skagen.

MHz Choice streams the three episodes of this Norwegian  TV miniseries. Each episode is one hour. English subtitles.

“Quirky” is the right description for this oddball cat-and-mouse story of murder and blackmail. Terje Lyngmo, the blackmailer, is an amateur at his new craft of blackmail and as such makes mistakes which his more clever target, the murderer, takes advantage of. Until the end it is not at all clear what to expect the conclusion to bring.

If it is possible to have a relaxing and fun story of murder and blackmail, then this easy story fits the bill.
