The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)

From IMDB:

An iconoclastic idealist runs his law practice out of the back of his Lincoln Town Car in this series based on Michael Connelly’s bestselling novels.

From Netflix you can stream 10 episodes of this series. Each episode lasts between 46 and 55 minutes.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who plays the lawyer Mickey Haller, is Mexican. In an interview  he explained that he was very nervous acting this part because he had to work so hard to eliminate his Mexican accent. He played Gabriel Ortega in “Goliath” (which you should not miss).

Mickey Haller is an honest man who works hard to defend seemingly guilty clients.   He also comes off as a loving father trying to come back after some bad times in his life. Neve Campbell does a great job as a prosecution lawyer who is also Mickey’s former wife.

Trust no one (as in “everybody lies”) and expect some clever plot twists. DO NOT MISS!

The Affair (2014)

From IMDB:

A struggling novelist and a young waitress strike up an extramarital relationship that promises to forever change the course of their lives.

From Amazon Prime you can stream the 10 episodes of this steamy romance and crime series. Each episode is just under 1 hour.

UPDATE:  Now from Amazon Prime you can stream 5 seasons of the soap opera that never ends. Season 2 has 12 episodes. Season 5 has 11 episodes. Seasons 1,3, and 4 have 10 episodes. Each episode is still about one hour.  That gives us a total of 53 hours of soap opera escape.

Nothing is perfect. Some portions are downright corny.  There is a strange interruption in plot when Noah seems to be having a series of psychotic episodes.  Did the writers forget to finish that part of the story?   Sometimes present events plus flashbacks from the past might seem somewhat confusing.

Toward the end I watched slowly because I did not want the story to end.  If a LOOOONG soap opera with a fair number of sometimes explicit sex scenes is your thing, DO NOT MISS!

Original review:

Noah Solloway is played by Dominic West,  the British actor with a long acting resumé. At the time of filming he was 45 years old.

Alison Bailey is played by Ruth Wilson, the British actress whose own resumé is just as long even though she was only 32 years old at the time of filming.  Her role as the sociopath “Alice Morgan” in the TV series “Luther” was chillingly unforgettable.

Alison’s marriage is failing while she and her husband morn the death of their young son.  Noah is having trouble writing his second novel and is trying desperately to be faithful to his wife even though he is immediately attracted to Alison.

Along the way there is a death that is being investigated  by Detective Jeffries.

As soap operas go, this one is not too bad.

Twin (2019)

From MHz Choice:

Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones, Beck) stars in this dual-identity thriller. After the accidental death of his upstanding twin, a ne’er-do-well surfer bum assumes his brother’s identity.

From MHz Choice you can stream the 8 hour-long episodes of this Norwegian drama.  English subtitles are provided.

Hivju plays both twins, Adam and Eric.  Adam is a successful businessman whereas Eric has always been an irresponsible, willful  free spirit.  For years the brothers have been at odds.  After all those years of separation, Eric appears on the scene. During Eric’s visit Ingrid Williksen, Adam’s wife, accidentally kills Adam. She persuades Eric to pretend he is Adam until Eric can disappear.  You learn all this at the beginning of the story. More than that I will not reveal. But this is a worthy drama involving suspicious police, a confused daughter, and a conflicted wife.

Good acting and plot make this series worth watching.

The Coroner (2015)

From Amazon Prime (Brit Box):

A high-flying lawyer returns, after a messy divorce, to the small town she escaped as a teenager to take up the post of Coroner. She finds herself thrown together with her old flame who broke her heart twenty years ago – now the local policeman – and they are forced to work together.

If you want to see the offerings from Amazon Prime’s Brit Box then you have to subscribe separately to Brit Box which is very inexpensive.

Brit Box offers 2 seasons of “The Coroner”.  Each season offers 10 episodes. Each episode lasts about 45 minutes and is a complete story.

Jane Kennedy is the coroner and Davey Higgins is the local policeman and her old love. He is married and faithful although he only mentions his wife whom we never see.  All 20 episodes show this pair flirting and discussing their old life in this small,  beautiful English seaside town named Lighthaven.  Her mother has a lover. They are a bawdy couple who together run a seaside pub.

As crime series go, this one is somewhat mediocre, easy on the emotions and never very violent. Think “Doc Martin” plus a few murders.

East of Everything (2008)

From AcornTV :

In this addictive Australian drama, travel writer Art Watkins (Richard Roxburgh, Rake, Moulin Rouge!) is forced to return home to Broken Bay when his mother dies and dictates in her will that he reopen the family resort along with his estranged brother, Vance (Tom Long, SeaChange).

From IMDB:

2 brothers who are always at odds are forced by their just-deceased mothers’ strange will to work together and rescue her deteriorating backpack hostel called ‘far out east’. A small town, Broken Bay, is home to most, but not all, of the characters where they work, play and generally get into trouble. A funny, sometimes sad look into the lives of people who are just trying to be themselves.

From AcornTV (all things British) you can stream 2 seasons of this Australian soap opera.  Season 1 has 6 episodes. Season 2 has 7 episodes. Each episode is about an hour.

Even if it is only a B-grade soap opera, still it is relaxing to watch a show without violence, serial killers, and other grim features. Season one is self-contained but leads naturally into season 2.  Many of the characters are somewhat eccentric or hippie or dopey or all of the above.  Other adjectives such as corny or maudlin or predictable come to mind.

Not exactly an enthusiastic recommendation.

Deep Water (2016)

From Acorn TV:

This “addictive” (Daily Review, Australia) Aussie drama inspired by real events follows Detectives Tori Lustigman (Yael Stone, Orange is the New Black) and Nick Manning (Noah Taylor, And Then There Were None) as they investigate the murder of a young man in a beachfront apartment in Bondi. Is this brutal murder a domestic, a robbery gone wrong, or a hate crime?

Acorn TV offered one episode each week until finally you can stream all 4 episodes of Series 1 (the only series, so far) whenever you wish.

Although most detective series have become so formulaic and clichéd,  “Deep Water” is an exception.  Soon you realize that the central theme is gay bashing in homophobic Australia, or at least in Bondi Beach, which is a popular beach and the name of the surrounding suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. What helps make the plot interesting is that as the episodes proceed, most of the important characters are revealed to be more and more involved in the killings.  Expect bloodshed and violence.

Definitely worth the time spent watching.

800 Words (2015)

From Acorn TV:

Still reeling from his wife’s recent death, widower George Turner impulsively decides to start afresh. Turner packs up his two teenage children and moves from the hustle and bustle of Sydney to the New Zealand coastal town of Weld, where he spent his summer vacations as a child. The Aussie invaders quickly become the center of attention in this small town populated by weird and wonderful locals.

Acorn TV (still $499 a month) offers this feel-good 1 season 6 episode TV series from New Zealand. Subtitles available.

Doc Martin’s small Cornwall town of Portwenn is not a far cry from the small New Zealand town of Weld. One difference is that George Turner is a normal man (although a grieving widower) with two normal children: daughter Shay and son Arlo.

As far as soap operas go, this one is NOT steamy, although sex has a pervasive influence on the entire plot. Shay has her first sexual romance. All the many beautiful women in the series have their eyes on the eligible George.

Every good soap opera needs a villain or villains and the Weld clan will do nicely in that respect.

But this is a feel-good series and the tension is held to a comfortable minimum. Nothing stays wrong for very long. Frankly it is a relief to have easy solutions to problems pop up regularly.

Watching this series is more relaxing than watching either “A Place To Call Home” or even, heaven help us,  presidential debates.
