The Noel Diary (2022)

From IMDB:

The story of a man who returns home on Christmas to settle his estranged mother’s estate. Once there, he discovers a diary that may hold secrets to his own past and of a beautiful young woman on a mysterious journey of her own.

From Netflix:

Cleaning out his childhood home at Christmas, a novelist meets a
woman searching for her birth mother. Will an old diary unlock
their pasts — and hearts?

From Netlix you can stream this 1 hour 40 minute romance drama.

While a step up from a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation, this is still in the same vein.  Of course the famous popular writer Jacob Turner (played by Justin Hartley) will eventually fall in love with Rachel (played by Barrett Doss).

And no, I have never heard of any of the actors.

Still, it is a relief from all the omnipresent violent entertainment in today’s streaming choices.

And it is NOT sappy.

My Policeman (2022)

From IMDB:

The arrival of Patrick into Marion and Tom’s home triggers the exploration of seismic events from 40 years previously.

From Amazon Prime:

A tale of forbidden romance and changing social conventions, My Policeman follows the relationships between three people—policeman Tom (Harry Styles/Linus Roache), teacher Marion (Emma Corrin/Gina
McKee) and museum curator Patrick (David Dawson/Rupert Everett)—and their emotional journey spanning decades.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1 hour 54 minute British drama.

In this intense drama Tom marries Marion all the while carrying on a secret love affair with Patrick.  Such an explanation is far too simple for such a superb, complex, well acted drama.

Because the action switches continually between the past and the present, each of the three characters are presented by two actors,  a younger actor for the past and an older actor for the present.

  • Harry Styles as young Tom also stars in the film “Don’t Worry Darling.”
  • Linus Roache as older Tom is well-known as the assistant DA from several seasons of “Law and Order.”
  • Emma Corrin as young Marion played Princess Diana Spencer in one of the seasons of “The Crown.”
  • Gina McKee as older Marion for me will always be Irene from “The Forsyte Saga.”
  • David Dawson as young Patrick played Alfred in “The Last Kingdom.”
  • Rupert Everett as older Patrick played George Downes in “My Best Friend’s Wedding.”

Critics found many negatives but audiences, including Kathy and me, loved it.

Casino Royale (2006)

From IMDB:

After earning 00 status and a licence to kill, secret agent James Bond sets out on his first mission as 007. Bond must defeat a private banker funding terrorists in a high-stakes game of poker at Casino Royale, Montenegro.

From Netflix you can stream this 2 hour 24 minute old favorite.

No need to critique such a familiar and famous film.  Instead I just remind you that the film is currently (Nov 2022) available on Netflix.

Probably what is most memorable for me is the plot twist at the end. Just when you relax and think “Ah, happy ending” , then WHAMMO!

The Awakening (2012)

From Kanopy:

This haunting thriller is set in 1921, in a post-war England where many of the bereaved seek solace in spiritualism. Haunted by the death of her fiancé, Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) is committed to debunking supernatural claims. When she is asked to visit a boarding school in the countryside to investigate the alleged sightings of a ghostly young boy, she feels compelled to take the job.

She sets to work, laying traps and gathering scientific evidence. Gradually secrets begin to unravel and the mystery surrounding the ghost appears nothing more than a prank. As Florence is set to leave, however, she experiences a chilling encounter that defies all reason.

From Kanopy you can stream this 1 hour 47 minute English ghost story.

As opposed to many ghost films which are often somewhat clichéd, this film presents a serious drama full of well-known British actors some of whom were:

  • Rebecca Hall (Florence Cathcart) played Loretta in “Tales From the Loop”.
  • Dominic West (Robert Mallory) was chilling as Noah Solloway in “The Affair”.
  • Imelda Staunton (Maud Hill) was unforgettable as Nora in “Nora Drake”.
  • Shaun Dooley (Malcom McNair) was Ricky Gillespie in ”Broadchurch”.
  • Joseph Mawle (Edward Judd) was Benjen Stark in “Game of Thrones”.

Worthwhile as this year’s Halloween entertainment.

Australiens (2014)

From KANOPY:

At the age of 10, Australian-born Andi Gibson had what she describes as a close encounter with a flying saucer. 17 years later, an airborne extra-terrestrial armada launches a nation-wide assault on Andi’s home country. Bloody hell, this is gonna be a long night.

From KANOPY you can stream this awful comedy that lasts 1 hour and 15 minutes

Now and then I find a film that is so BAD that it is comically GOOD. Probably this farce was made by teenagers or Martians. Most of the actors seem to be teenagers. Sprinkled in are some equally inept adults.

After reading newspaper accounts of events in this currently very troubled planet,  such tongue-in-cheek comic relief just at bedtime might induce a more peaceful sleep.

A Long Lost Silence (2022)

From IMDB:

During the summer, Jules, 10 years old, is welcomed by a young couple in the countryside, because his mother had an accident. How to feel at home in a village where its inhabitants are shaken by deep antagonisms?

From MHz Choice:

French thriller about a 10-year-old boy encountering secrets among the people who’ve taken him in for the summer.

From MHz Choice you can stream this 3 episode French mystery thriller. Each episode lasts no more than 55 minutes.  The French title is “Les Hautes Herbes”. English subtitles are provided.

Jules, the 10 year old center of attention, hardly ever speaks. But his glances and stares speak volumes as he watches the adults around him misbehave in various ways.  When episode 3 reveals the killer, things get very tense.

Lots of contention between characters and  emotional scenes make this very French film watchable.

Suspect (2022)

From IMDB:

Veteran detective Danny Frater is called to a hospital mortuary to identify a corpse only to find it is his estranged daughter. Traumatized by the news she took her own life, Frater sets out to discover the truth about her death.

From Amazon Prime Brit Box (or just Brit Box) you can stream this 8 episode murder inquiry. Each episode lasts only 23 minutes.

Danny Frater (played by James Nesbitt) gropes from clue to clue, from suspicious character to sinister character desperately trying to prove his daughter was murdered.  Along the way he comes to the wrenching realization that he failed his daughter completely.

Incidentally James Nesbitt once starred in an 8 episode TV series from 2014 called “The Missing”.  His character name was of all things “Tony Hughes”.

While nothing to write home about, the story was compelling and sad right up to the shocking ending.

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

From Amazon Prime:

A prominent politician meets a beautiful ballerina and instantly falls in love. However, when mysterious men conspire to keep the pair apart, he is forced to make the wrenching choice between his predetermined path and the only woman he has ever loved.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1 hour 46 minute romantic fantasy film.

Matt Damon has managed to keep getting acting roles.  As a person he is very appealing while as an actor he is so-so.  Speaking of so-so, so is this foolish plot. Supposedly there is this supernatural bureaucracy that plots the life of each person and keeps that plot in some magical notebook.  Need I go on?

Pleasant enough to watch. Give it a B minus.

Language Lessons (2021)

From Kanopy:

When his husband surprises him with weekly Spanish lessons, Adam (Mark Duplass, Bombshell, The Morning Show) is unsure about where or how this new element will fit into his already structured life. But after tragedy strikes, his Spanish teacher, Cariño (Natalie Morales, Dead To Me, Parks And Recreation), becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed. Adam develops an unexpected and complicated emotional bond with Cariño — but do you really know someone just because you’ve experienced a traumatic moment with them? Bittersweet, honest, and at times darkly funny, this award-winning debut from director Natalie Morales is a poignant, funny, and emotionally resonant (Screen Rant) exploration of platonic love.

From Kanopy you can stream this 1.5 hour film.

Adam and Cariño talk via Zoom sessions. In fact the entire film is a series of such sessions, several of which are one-sided.  Just after the first session, Adam’s husband dies. Adam goes into deep grief and depression which he escapes with the help of Cariño.  Mostly they speak in English and if they do speak in Spanish there are subtitles. Really the language lessons are besides the point. Eventually we learn quite a lot about about Adam and Cariño.

This film is so sweet and touching that if you don’t yet belong to Kanopy (which is free), then join just for the chance to see this tender film.

The Beyond (2018)

From Amazon Prime:

After observing an anomaly in space, scientists transplant human brains in to synthetic bodies and send them through the wormhole.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1.5 hour sci-fi fantasy.

Proceeding as a sort of continuous interview with the scientists, which means a lot of talking heads, the plot mixes fantasy with the personal lives of the participants.  In most sci-fi scenarios we usually have to suspend disbelief and this example is no different.  However,  this particular sci-fi film does not fit the usual clichéd mold due to its monologue plus action style of flow.

Depiction of the aliens is perhaps the most original I have seen.

Probably not for everyone but well done production.
