Moonlight (2016)

Gooseflesh must mean that I have just seen a perfectly made, beautifully acted, true to life, and really moving film. Here is a film all of whose actors are African American speaking their own patois. But much more important are the things left unsaid. Dialog is terse to non-existent, but each word carries a lot of weight, sometimes a world of pain. Hats off to the writer and director Barry Jenkins for getting his actors to exercise such verbal restraint.

Because each of the three parts of Chiron’s life (childhood, adolescence, adulthood) had its own set of players, there are just too many actors to mention. Nor is it fair to omit a name because each part was chiseled to perfection.  Therefore, to mention just a few:

  • Mahershala Ali (who played Juan) is instantly recognized as the character Remy Danton from “House of Cards”.
  •  Naomie Harris  played Chiron’s crack addicted mother. She presented both ugly, hurtful scenes and also a touching reunion with Chiron.
  • André Holland (who played the adult Kevin) played Dr. Algernon Edwards in the TV series “The Knick”.
  • Trevante Rhodes (who played the adult Chiron)  played Ramsey Walters in the TV series “If Loving You Is Wrong”.

Let us be grateful for our own situation in life as we watch this sad, sad portrait of Americans who have such limited opportunities.

London Spy (2015)

A chance romance between two men from very different worlds, one from the headquarters of the Secret Intelligence Service, the other from a world of clubbing and youthful excess, leads into mystery after one of them is found murdered.

From Netflix you can stream this 5-episode one-season series. Indeed Wikipedia confirms that there are only 5 episodes. Why would I doubt this? Read on to find the answer.

Give this series a 10 for originality, sinister plot, and great actors. But WARNING: Do not expect to live happily ever after.

In the novel “1984” Big Brother is always watching. Here also, the character Danny (played by Ben Whishaw) is up against an unbeatable conspiracy which only seems to be more malignant with each attempt by Danny to fight back.

Danny, a young promiscuous gay man, meets Alex (played by Edward Holcroft) a seemingly repressed and virginal gay man. After the two become lovers (there is one scene of the two men making love) and genuinely fall in love,  Alex disappears. Danny spends the rest of the series exploring this disappearance.

Along the way Danny teams up with a remarkable set of well-known actors:

  • Jim Broadbent (if you have ever watched British entertainment, you will recognize this famous and seasoned actor) pays Scottie, Danny’s aging gay mentor and friend.
  • David Hayman (again an instantly recognizable British actor) plays as one of the conspirator’s servants Mr. Turner.
  • Charlotte Rampling (need I say more?) is one of Alex’s mothers. How’s that for intriguing?

As swept up as I was (i.e.  “binge watching”), I have to qualify:

The Good:

  • Acting is as superb as it is really, really slow. This story is a monument to sad, mournful pondering. But Ben Whishaw can just stand still and emote. No action required.
  • As a mystery story, it just sinks deeper and deeper.

The Bad:

  • Story speed is really, really slow.
  • Too many times the details seem to be too improbable. Can any conspiracy be that all-powerful and airtight?
  • One of the plot twists prompted my response “Give me a break!”
  • Do not expect to live happily ever after, but rather hopefully ever after.

Clearly, this film will not be everyone’s cup of tea. It just worked for me despite any plot disappointments.

 

 

Lanester (2013)

From Amazon Prime:

In the west of Paris, three strange murders are committed. Each time, the victim is eviscerated before being arranged in a macabre display. While discovering one of these, police commander Eric Lanester loses his sight. With the help of Gabrielle, a young woman taxi driver, the cop nevertheless continues his investigation, which soon awakens demons he considered buried forever.

Originally, as far as I can tell, “Lanester” was just a French film that told only one story. But now from Amazon Prime you can download three episodes of Season 1. Each episode (with English subtitles) last about 1 hour 30 minutes. Moreover each episode is dated December 31, 2013. Running through all three episodes is a strongly unifying theme involving Police Commander Lanester and his mentally ill brother. All of which seems to suggest that the original film was re-packaged into three episodes.

In any case, the story is compelling enough to recommend. Just beware that there are depicted grisly murders.

Deep Water (2016)

This “addictive” (Daily Review, Australia) Aussie drama inspired by real events follows Detectives Tori Lustigman (Yael Stone, Orange is the New Black) and Nick Manning (Noah Taylor, And Then There Were None) as they investigate the murder of a young man in a beachfront apartment in Bondi. Is this brutal murder a domestic, a robbery gone wrong, or a hate crime?

Acorn TV offered one episode each week until finally you can stream all 4 episodes of Series 1 (the only series, so far) whenever you wish.

Although most detective series have become so formulaic and clichéd,  “Deep Water” is an exception.  Soon you realize that the central theme is gay bashing in homophobic Australia, or at least in Bondi Beach, which is a popular beach and the name of the surrounding suburb in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. What helps make the plot interesting is that as the episodes proceed, most of the important characters are revealed to be more and more involved in the killings.  Expect bloodshed and violence.

Definitely worth the time spent watching.

Spotlight (2015)

The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.

For more than 2 hours Kathy and I sat glued to the screen waiting to see if the Boston Globe could get the goods on Cardinal Law. We here in Boston have a more immediate connection with the proceedings and can better appreciate the Omertà (Italian for “conspiracy of silence”) that was Catholic Boston and especially South Boston.  Would the film have been so compelling if the plot had been merely fiction? In my opinion, it is the sad truth of the situation that makes the viewing so powerful. On the other hand, the film could have been poorly done and could have become a boring sermon. Instead the entire construction is flawless. Some Catholics to this day cannot bring themselves to watch this film.

There are NO sex scenes in the film.

When the film is over, be sure to stay for the follow-up history that appears on the screen.  You will be horrified. For example, you will learn that the Pope rewarded Cardinal Law with a prestigious position in Rome which Law resigned when he (Law) reached 80 years of age. If you read the Wikipedia article, you will read:

In May 2012 MSNBC reported that Law was “the person in Rome most forcefully supporting” the Vatican response to Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori‘s petition to investigate and crack down on the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, a large group of American nuns seeking a greater role in the Church.

According to mere word of mouth, Law once bragged he would be the first American pope. Instead he will probably be canonized as the “Patron Saint of Pedophiles.”

For me one striking visual experience was my trying to recognize the aging male actors from earlier films and TV shows (Rachel McAdams is too young to have changed much) :

  • Mark Ruffalo as Mike Rezendes still looks reasonably young.
  • Michael Keaton as Walter Robinson  is a far cry from his character in “Beetlejuice”.
  • Liev Schreiber as soft-spoken Marty Baron completely fooled me with his beard.
  • John Slattery as Ben Bradlee will always be one of the senior partners from “Mad Men”.
  • Will you recognize Stanley Tucci as the eccentric Mitchell Grabedian?
  • Jamey Sheridan as Jim Sullivan in the past played Captain James Deakins in “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”. But do not miss him in “Handsome Harry“.
  • Paul Guilfoyle as Pete Conely will always be Capt. Jim Brass in “CSI”.
  • Do you suppose Len Criou (who plays Henry Reagan in “Blue Bloods”) was embarrassed to play Cardinal Law?

DO NOT MISS this film to remember.

Hinterland (2013)

BBC police detective drama series set in Aberystwyth against the backdrop of mountainous terrain, close-knit villages, and windswept sand dunes of the coastline to the badlands of the hinterland. Starring Richard Harrington as DCI Tom Mathias.

Netflix now offers Season 2 with 5 episodes. Below the older review still holds true, especially how slow moving and taciturn the scenes are.  Always start with the beginning episode: although each episode is a self-contained story, there are sub-threads that run through all the episodes which are crucial for appreciating the series.

From Netflix comes this Welsh one-season detective series either as DVDs or streamed. All four episodes are intense and grim. For example, episode 1 involves child abuse. Richard Harrington as DCI Tom Mathias is the silent type: he broods more than he speaks. Photography is beautiful although it depicts Wales as a barren, wild, scenic land. In this respect the mood of the country matches the mood of the characters. Episode 3 was a bit complicated. Spoken language is English and subtitles are available. Acting is superb. Plots are well constructed.

If you can survive the dark atmosphere, DO NOT MISS!

Philomena (2013)

Floundering BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith and aging Irishwoman Philomena Lee form an unlikely bond when they pair up to find the son Philomena was forced to give up for adoption 50 years ago.

If I had not already known the story of Philomena I would have finished watching this marvelous film in a really upset and angry mood. Never mind that this outrageously true story has as happy an ending as is possible given the situation.

Judi Dench (Philomena) and Steve Coogan (Martin Sixsmith) play off one another perfectly as in ying versus yang, as in a Catholic believer versus an atheist, as in simple down-to-earth versus a sophisticated Oxford educated journalist. Much of the charm of the story is seeing each of them change over the course of the film: he softens into compassion, she forgives the evil nuns but finally feels the need to let the world know what happened to all those unwed young mothers.

No more will I say. Just enjoy the plot twists. One surprise (this is not a spoiler) is that at one point seemingly simple Philomena shows that she understands in blunt terms quite a bit about contemporary mores. Somehow that fact just did not ring true with me.

As a culture-vulture side note: Peter Hermann (Pete Olsson) is married to Mariska Hargitay (“Law and Order”) who is the daughter of Mickey Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield. Just remember that for your next game of Trivial Pursuit.

What Maisie Knew (2013)

In this updated rendering of the timeless Henry James novel, a perceptive 6-year-old girl becomes a bargaining tool when she gets caught in the midst of a toxic custody fight between her self-seeking, childish parents.

How on earth did the directors (Scott McGehee, David Siegel) get Maisie (played by incredibly young Onata Aprile) to act so perfectly? Granted much of her mannerisms are what you would expect from such a little girl. But at certain points, especially in one final painful scene with her egocentric failure of a mother (Julianne Moore) just one subtle facial expression says it all.

Congrats to Steve Coogan for playing such a similarly egocentric repellent failure of a father.

But eventually you just smile seeing Alexander Skarsgård and Joanna Vanderham together as two misused victims of the ugly couple. Here are the only two people in the world that really love Maisie.

Just beware that the 21st century is the century of unresolved conflicts. If you can stand the heartache, DO NOT MISS!
