Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

From IMDB:

Two con men try to settle their rivalry by betting on who can swindle a young American heiress out of fifty thousand dollars first.

From Kanopy and Amazon Prime you can stream this 35 year old comedy which lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Needless to say, if one of the actors is Steve Martin, we are probably talking about a comedy.  Michael Caine is the perfect matchup against Martin.

Old but still lots of fun and plot surprises.

Surviving Christmas (2004)

From IMDB:

A lonely, obnoxious young millionaire pays a family to spend Christmas with him.

From Amazon Prime  you can stream this 1.5 hour comedy.

As a perfect foil to Ben Affleck’s millionaire Drew Latham is James Gandolfini’s father-of-the-family Tom Valco.  Affleck as an exaggerated comical focal point is a departure from his other films. He is actually quite successful in the part, as is Gandolfini (who, unfortunately for us, died in 2013.)

Everyone’s reaction to comedy is personal, but this film worked for me.

A Shot in the Dark (1964)

From KANOPY:

Peter Sellers returns as the hapless Inspector Clouseau in this hysterical comedy which introduces Herbert Lom as the long-suffering Dreyfus, and Burt Kwouk as Cato. Mistakenly assigned to a high-profile case, Clouseau finds himself falling for the prime suspect — a beautiful maid named Maria (Elke Sommer), whose talent for being in the wrong place at the wrong time rivals Clouseau’s. But as the body count grows higher, Clouseau must find the real culprit quickly, or his career will be finit!

From Kanopy you can stream this 1 hour 42 minute old classic British comedy.

Recently, I reviewed a 2006 remake of this film called “The Pink Panther” starring Steve Martin.  In comparing the new version with the old 1964 version starring Peter Sellers,  my personal belly laugh count was a bit higher with the newer version.

Try both,  the plots of each film differ from one another.

Men In Black (1997)

From IMDB:

A police officer joins a secret organization that polices and monitors extraterrestrial interactions on Earth.

From Netflix you can stream this old, well known comedy film that lasts 1 hour and 38 minutes.

25 years ago this sci-fi satire led to sequels.  Nothing more than a sequence of outlandish extraterrestrial aliens,  the film offers an escape into discardable nonsense.

Of course we recognize Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith immediately.  But it took me awhile to recognize Vincent D’Onofrio as the gawky monster Edgar.  Can you spot Tony Shalhoub?

The Pink Panther (2006)

From Netflix:

Bumbling Inspector Clouseau must solve the murder of a world famous soccer coach and catch the thief who stole his priceless  diamond ring.

From Netflix  you can stream this 1 hour 32 minute comedy film.

Steve Martin’s remake of this 1963 classic film which starred Peter Sellars has some good laughs, especially the sight gags. Unfortunately from Netflix you can also stream the embarrassingly unfunny and vulgar “Pink Panther 2” which you should avoid at all costs.

Considering that this film was made in 2006 it seems striking that it includes cameo appearances by Clive Owen and Jason Statham. By 2006 Clive Owen had already made “Second Sight” and was making “Children of Men.”  By 2006 Jason Statham had already made “The Transporter” and “The Italian Job.” Why did they agree to cameo appearances?

This throwaway movie at least offers some belly laughs.

John Dies at the End (2012)

From IMDB:

A new street drug that sends its users across time and dimensions has one drawback: some people return no longer human. Can two college drop-outs save humanity from this silent, otherworldly invasion?

With the help of Amazon Prime you can waste 1 hour and 39 precious minutes of your life watching this tongue-in-cheek horror flick.

In fact, this this B- farce is so horrible that it is a hoot, wasteful, but still a hoot. Imaginative special effects present lots of gory creatures. And then there is that parade of topless busty women. Don’t let any of this tempt you to watch such acceptable trash.

MISS!

Police Academy (1984)

From IMDB:

A group of good-hearted, but incompetent misfits enter the police academy, but the instructors there are not going to put up with their pranks.

From Netflix you can stream this 1 hour 36 minute comedy from way back in 1984.

Surprising how explicitly ribald a film that is nearly 40 years old can be.   Pratfalls, sight gags, and downright lewd situations gave me some genuine belly laughs.  Odd, isn’t it, that I cannot find a defect in this obviously B- screwball comedy.

Dog (2022)

From IMDB:

Two former Army Rangers are paired against their will on the road trip of a lifetime. Army Ranger Briggs (Channing Tatum) and Lulu (a Belgian Malinois dog) buckle into a 1984 Ford Bronco and race down the Pacific Coast in hopes of making it to a fellow soldier’s funeral on time. Along the way, they’ll drive each other completely crazy, break a small handful of laws, narrowly evade death, and learn to let down their guards in order to have a fighting chance of finding happiness.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1 hour 41 minute comedy-drama.

While not exactly fit for children, this dog story has moments of fun, sadness, and eventually redemption.  Definitely a feel-good film.

The Lost City (2022)

From IMDB:

A reclusive romance novelist on a book tour with her cover model gets swept up in a kidnapping attempt that lands them both in a cutthroat jungle adventure.

From Amazon Prime you can stream this 1 hour 51 minute comedy film.

Sandra Bullock comedies offer an easy way to relax. Here she teams up with Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, and Daniel Radcliffe. Bullock continues to look good whereas Tatum might be ageing past his young hunk persona.  Pitt’s part of the story comes to an unexpected end. Radcliffe’s agent continues to develop his client’s role variety.

Amazing how Bullock and Tatum can hold their breath and swim for several minutes through an underwater tunnel!

Surprisingly vulgar and explicit at times, but still the kind of fun you would expect from a Bullock comedy.
