Midsomer Murders (1997-2012)

Beginning in 1997 British TV has offered 91 (by my count) episodes of a detective series called “Midsomer Murders”. As in much British TV of this nature you are immersed in a green, fertile, picturesque, made-for-gullible-Americans locale where everything seems so quaint, friendly, folksy, and what we hope is typically British. But that is precisely why Kathy and I enjoy the series. Yes, you do see blood and you could not very well have a murder mystery without a murder or three. But even the occasional torture scene is downright polite. All of this contrasts completely with another current British TV suspense culture which often goes out of its way to be gory, explicit, pessimistic, and gloomy in the extreme. Examples of the latter are “Waking the Dead” or “MI-5”. Whereas Kathy does NOT leave the room for “Midsomer Murders”, there are scenes from the rough series that send her flying in terror. Somehow the sex and violence does not seem to phase yours truly.

Another attractive feature of the series is the slower pace. Plots can be complicated but often there is discussion between characters that tries to explain what is happening.

Additionally an episode is willing to include some “sideshow attraction” such as fifteen minutes of a cricket match or a town’s tradition of a donkey race. That may sound stupid, but actually these extras only add to the charm of the series.

And again I applaud the intelligent tradition in British drama to use actors who are not handsome or beautiful but just plain interesting.

If you want a complete catalog of the series, go IMDB. In addition to learn all about the fictional county called Midsomer as well as the large cast of characters you can try Wikipedia.

Beginning in 2006 the DVDs offer subtitles which Kathy and I need. Therefore I have listed below only those episodes which offer subtitles.

MI-5

From NetFlix:

This award-winning series dramatizes the professional exploits and personal lives of the “spooks” of MI-5, the British equivalent of the FBI. No-nonsense head officer Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) guides a band of dedicated spies who risk their lives every day. The team includes expert and junior members who must balance real life with the job’s requirement for complete secrecy, no matter the cost. Matthew Macfadyen and Richard Armitage co-star.

Beginning in 2002 and continuing at least to 2010, this British TV-series is “utterly smashing”. Intense, sometimes hard to watch, but incredibly exciting in just about every episode. What makes some episodes difficult to watch is that the members of MI-5 are forced at times to make hard decisions that involve “collateral damage” (meaning some poor soul dies), so much so that those members are often damaged themselves and actually leave MI-5 (i.e. leave the show). In fact, be prepared for many, sometimes disappointing cast changes. For example Rupert William Penry-Jones (the character Adam Carter) started the show and then disappeared for awhile to be replaced by Matthew Macfadyen (the character Tom Quinn) who then leaves the show and is replaced by Rupert William Penry-Jones.

There are too many wonderful characters to even mention them. You can find them all listed in IMDB.

In addition to spook plots, there are also many romances. But any romance for a member of MI-5 is next to impossible because even their significant others cannot know what these spooks do for a living.

The Punisher (2004)

From NetFlix:

Undercover FBI agent Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) is crushed when his wife and children are killed after accidentally witnessing a mafia hit. So with nothing left to lose or to live for, Castle becomes “The Punisher” — a one-man judge, jury and executioner. John Travolta, Laura Harring, Samantha Yathis and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos co-star in this moody action film based on the adventures of the popular Marvel Comics character.

Murderous Marvel Mayhem for Misguided MovieFans.

Yes, it is just kid stuff watching 35 year old Thomas Jane play a brooding, alcoholic Marvel comic “superhero”. So why would you ever watch this film ?

  • You love violence and mayhem.
  • You love revenge supposedly justified as “justice”.
  • You love seeing our hero get beat up repeatedly and yet bouncing back each time.
  • You love wondering just how our hero will escape from his latest predicament (and he always does in some clever fashion).
  • You think John Travolta makes a super villain.
  • Your hobby is exploding automobiles.
  • You have nothing better to do.

Around the Bend (2004)

From NetFlix:

Four generations of men are suddenly brought together by the chance to uncover the truth about their family’s past. When their eldest member passes away, the remaining trio embarks on a journey that takes them out on the road and into a world full of surprises — some comic, some dramatic, and all of them personal. Stars Michael Caine, Christopher Walken, Josh Lucas, Glenne Headly and Jonah Bobo.

Where there are Michael Caine and Christopher Walken, you would expect something good. In fact, you will not be disappointed with the eccentric and somewhat sad plot. As the boy Zach’s great-grandfather, Michael Caine’s behavior is “around the bend” as he plans a bizarre final trip for the other three actors as a way to reunite the three immediately following his death. Walken is Zach’s grandfather who abandoned his son Josh Lucas who is Zach’s father. Surprises and quirks along the way keep the plot interesting and eventually lead to some sad final revelations.

Good acting kept the film from being sentimental. Jonah Bobo avoids being too cute. Josh Lucas plays a man who is not only physically cripple, but emotionally repressed. He may fit the category of actors who act by not acting.

Not at all a waste of time.

Cellular (2004)

From NetFlix:

Ryan (Chris Evans) is driving in his car when his cell phone rings. But when he answers, there’s a stranger (Kim Basinger) on the other end of the line who’s desperate to get someone to help her, her husband and her son escape from the madman (Jason Statham) who’s abducted them. If Ryan fails to act quickly, innocent people will be killed. But his cell phone battery is low — and he has no idea where the helpless family is.

With the bent LAPD cop Jason Statham as your enemy you probably want to be really careful. (NetFlix is wrong, his character is NOT a madman). Kim Basinger (“Nine 1/2 Weeks””) we all know. Chris Evans (Jimmy in “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond”) at the time of filming was 30 years old and still looked like a kid. He also plays in the 2009 movie “Push”. William Macy as the good cop adds his usual brand of offbeat humor.

Some lesser actors are worth mentioning. Rick Hoffman you have seen a lot but probably don’t know his name. In this film he adds comic relief as a really arrogant lawyer whose Porche figures in the plot. He played Chase Chapman in “Samantha Who ?

It never fails to amaze me how often Richard Burgi pops up. He played the husband Craig Martin in the film. You may have seen him as Philip Collier in 18 episodes of “Days of our Lives”. He played a wife abuser in an episode of “Law and Order: SVU”.

Intense energy, clever and original action scenes and plots, and some comic relief made this film for me a fun experience. Somehow Ryan (Chris Evans) kept coming up with novel ways to foil the bad guys.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

From NetFlix:

After learning that his mercurial ex-girlfriend, Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), has undergone an experimental medical process to purge all memories of him, mild-mannered Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) opts for the same procedure. But during the operation, he decides he doesn’t want to lose what’s left of their relationship and tries to conceal her image in his memory cells. This quirky romantic comedy won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Once again a film that probably only Jim Carrey could, or even would want to, carry out. Belonging to the tradition of “figure this out if you are able”, most of the film features Carrey and Winslet wandering frantically from memory to memory while he tries to preserve his memory of her even while he lies asleep with his head in a helmet that is erasing such memories.

Don’t say I did not warn you!

Man on Fire (2004)

From NetFlix:

Jaded ex-CIA operative John Creasy (Denzel Washington) reluctantly accepts a job as the bodyguard for a 10-year-old girl (Dakota Fanning) in Mexico City. They clash at first, but eventually bond, and when she’s kidnapped he’s consumed by fury and will stop at nothing to save her life. Tony Scott directs this thriller about a demoralized soul whose sense of purpose is reawakened by a human connection. Christopher Walken and Mickey Rourke co-star.

Seeing one kidnapping film is almost tantamount to seeing all of them. Plot twists keep this kidnapping adventure alive. Also the secondary (primary ?) theme of John Creasy finding something worth living for helps to hold the plot together. Violent revenge takes over after the kidnapping which disappointed me because I thought Creasy was trying to rise above his life of killing. Assumedly the justification is that the action takes place in Mexico which is so corrupt that our American notion of law and justice has no meaning. Unfortunately that is a fairly accurate description of Mexico.

Dakota Fanning as the girl Pita is her usual cute self. I wonder what kind of actress she will eventually become. Denzel Washington plays Denzel Washington.

Downfall (2004)

From NetFlix:

After introducing audiences to Adolf Hitler’s stenographer, Traudl Junge, in the gripping documentary Blind Spot: Hitler’s Secretary, director Oliver Hirschbiegel brings Junge to life in this Oscar-nominated drama. With painstaking realism, Hirschbiegel’s Best Foreign Language Film contender adopts Junge’s (Alexandra Maria Lara) point of view to recreate Hitler’s (Bruno Ganz) final 12 days in his Berlin bunker.

Before watching this entrancing recreation of Hitler’s last days, you will benefit greatly by reading the Wikipedia article. What is important to appreciate is that after reading this Wikipedia article you can believe that what you see is very close to what actually happened. The film begins and ends with a filmed interview with the real and elderly Traudl Junge whose accounts as a witness form the basis of much of what we know. Above all else, praise is heaped upon Bruno Ganz’s painstaking and near perfect imitation of Hitler’s voice with its Austrian accent. Ganz worked for months with recordings of Hitler’s voice.

Ignore the politics and the complete horror of what happened. Instead see if you can comprehend (and I find it difficult) the extent to which those involved were blindly loyal to the end to “Der Fürher”. He was revered as a god even while he was obviously unbalanced and out of touch with reality. It is chilling to watch Frau Goebbels poison her six beautiful children after which Joseph and Magda Goebbels shoot each other.

Stay to the end to see captions telling us what happened to many of the main personalities (for example, when and how they died). For me it was difficult attaching a name to each of the many many characters. This last recap fortunately provides photos of the actors as a reference.

Two hours and 36 minutes make a long film, but I couldn’t tear my eyes from the screen.

Twisted (2004)

From NetFlix:

Female cop Jessica (Ashley Judd) is more dedicated to enforcing the law than most of her colleagues, since she feels she has a lot to make up for: Her father moonlighted as a serial killer. Could it be that the apple doesn’t fall very far from the tree? That’s what Jessica thinks when she finds herself at the center of her own investigation as past lovers inexplicably start dying at a breakneck pace.

Did I guess who-done-it ? No, I was wrong twice. Try your own luck.

Good acting, well shot in San Francisco, well-known actors, sexy! Could have been an hour TV crime show but the film is still a strong B+. Not a total waste of time.

A Home At The End Of The World (2004)

From NetFlix:

Boyhood pals Bobby (Colin Farrell) and Jonathan (Dallas Roberts) both love the same woman (Robin Wright Penn), but in different ways. (For one thing, Jonathan is gay). Yet, undaunted, they all try to make a life together — and even have a baby — in 1980s New York. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Cunningham’s novel gets deft treatment in this story about a troika of close friends who enter into an unconventional living arrangement.

Am I so conventional that I wonder if the sweet but decidedly unconventional situations portrayed in the film are even possible ?

All around the acting is excellent. Colin Farrell was 28 when he made this film. He comes off as just a sweet, loving, accepting, and somewhat naive young man whose worst fear is being alone. Is this character too good to be true ?

I can hardly believe that Sissy Spacek (who plays the mother-stepmother to the two men) was 55 when she made this film. She has a beauty that seems too young for 55 (or am I age prejudiced ?). The scene in which the boys teach her to smoke pot is priceless.

Dallas Roberts is convincing as a not especially happy gay man who loves Robin Wright Penn AND Colin Farrell. It is novel to see Farrell’s character remain completely straight yet allow himself to show real physical affection toward Roberts (dancing, hugging, kissing, but that’s it!). In our society would that even be possible ?
