Mister Bean (1995)

From Amazon Prime:

Life is a difficult challenge for Mr Bean, who despite being a grown adult, has trouble completing even the simplest of tasks. Thankfully, his perseverance is usually rewarded, and he finds an ingenious way around the problem. British sitcom created by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis, and starring Atkinson as the title character.

From Amazon you can stream 14 episodes of season 1 of this British comedy TV series. Each episode lasts about 25 minutes.

Rowan Atkinson is a master of British slapstick comedy. Each episode contains 3 skits. If you are a fan of this type of comedy, I can almost guarantee you will have quite a few belly laughs.

McCallum (1995)

From IMDB:

From deep within the morgue at St. Patrick’s Hospital in London’s East End, Dr. Iain McCallum and Dr. Angela Moloney along with a team of brilliant pathologists and detectives help the dead tell their stories.

From Acorn TV you can stream two seasons of this pathologist crime series.  Season 1 has 4 episodes and Season 2 has 5 episodes. Each episode lasts about 1.5 hours.

Gory, riveting, and clever are a few apt adjectives for this engrossing series. Personal relations among the constant set of characters are as important as the plots themselves. Most episodes are complete crime and solution stories.

John Hannah, who plays Dr. Iain McCallum, was 33 years old at the time of filming.  Now (2020) he is still going strong at the age of 58.

Unfortunately season 2 episode 5 is a disappointing episode. At that time in the series, Iain and Angela have emigrated to Canada and are no longer in the episode.  For some strange reason this fifth episode introduces new characters and offers a bizarre almost silly plot. You might want to skip this last blunder of a story.

Otherwise — DO NOT MISS!

McCallum (1995)

From IMDB:

From deep within the morgue at St. Patrick’s Hospital in London’s East End, Dr. Iain McCallum and Dr. Angela Moloney along with a team of brilliant pathologists and detectives help the dead tell their stories.

Previously I reviewed the Scottish TV series “Rebus” which in its first season starred John Hannah. Subsequently I discovered the TV series “McCallum” also starring John Hannah. Both can be streamed from Acorn TV (currently $4.99 per month).

“McCallum” is at least as good if not better than similar series. Much like “Vera“,  each episode is approximately one and a half hours. Series 1 offers four episodes whereas Series 2 offers five episodes.

Rather than a simple who-done-it, this series similar to the other high quality series has a running theme which features other story threads. Almost without exception, each such series deals with the home life (or home non-life) of the main sleuth.  Of course, you can expect a few romances along the way.

One possibly unique characteristic, is that John Hannah as Dr. Iain McCallum the forensic pathologist must constantly prevent the detective DI Bracken from rushing to false conclusions.

“McCallum” does not seem to be as bloody as other series, nor as violent Still, however, not for children.

If this is your genre, you cannot go wrong. In fact, if this is your genre, DO NOT MISS!

Deal Breaker (1995) [Book Review]

From Wikipedia:

Harlan Coben (born January 4, 1962) is an American author of mystery novels and thrillers. The plots of his novels often involve the resurfacing of unresolved or misinterpreted events in the past (such as murders, fatal accidents, etc.) and often have multiple plot twists. Both series of Coben’s books are set in and around New York and New Jersey, and some of the supporting characters in the two series have appeared in both.

If you are looking for wisecracks and funny repartee, go no farther. If you are looking for something a bit more serious, well-crafted, and original then look elsewhere. This lightweight book is the first of the Myron Bolitar series and is a fun read but nothing special.

Myron Bolitar is a former athlete and current sports agent. One of his clients, a football player named Christian, becomes associated with the disappearance of Christian’s girlfriend. In order to save Christian’s career (and his own commissions) Myron investigates the crime with the help of his very eccentric and somewhat unscrupulous quasi-partner Win.

Expect to encounter murder, pornography, gangsters, sex scenes, adultery, and more. In other words, expect to find what you usually find in somewhat mediocre crime novels.

The Basketball Diaries (1995)

From NetFlix:

Jim Carroll’s autobiographical novel chronicles a young basketball player’s
descent into addiction. As Jim’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) experimentation gives
way to a heroin habit supported by prostitution, he’s unable to face his
mother (Lorraine Bracco) or his demons at home, and former addict Reggie
(Ernie Hudson) may be the only one who can save him. Haunting and real ,
director Scott Kalvert’s drama is a powerful portrayal of chaos and redemption.

I almost hesitate to recommend this almost-B movie which I put in the VIOLENT category. A very young Leonard DiCaprio shows what a promising actor he was. There is a moment in which he realizes how much of his life he has thrown away that is just stunning. Will you recognize the bald Bobby dying of leukemia as Michael Imperioli who together with Lorraine Bracco were characters in “The Sopranos” ? Also very young was Mark Wahlberg as Mickey.

The treatment of sex is crude, unrestrained, and explicit. But then part of the joy of this movie is the unrestrained approach to living enacted by this band of soon-to-be hoodlums. It is this lack of restraint that eventually is their undoing. But if I cannot stop watching a film, then I only hope there is something worthwhile for others to see as well.

You stand warned!

Babe (1995)

From NetFlix:

Director Chris Noonan’s tale of precocious piglet Babe’s (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) struggle to fit in and become a champion sheepherder won the hearts of audiences and critics. Nominated for seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture), Babe won the Visual Effects Oscar, and everything from farmer Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell) to the multitude of farm animals to the humble, edgy script is remarkably appealing for kids and adults alike.

One of those feel-good movies that everyone should see before they die.

Desperado (1995)

From NetFlix:

Writer-director Robert Rodriguez’s indie debut and his big-budget follow-up are both featured on this disc. Sundance Film Festival winner El Mariachi chronicles the travails of a traveling musician (Carlos Gallardo) who’s been mistaken for an assassin who carries his weapons in a guitar case — and whom the local crime lord wants dead. In Desperado, the mariachi (Antonio Banderas) returns — this time seeking revenge. Salma Hayek co-stars.

Antonio Banderas was so impressed with El Mariachi that he wanted
to do it over again in Hollywood style and spent a fortune doing it.
Expect crazy technical violence. This is NOT a great film !!!!!!!!!!
