Warehouse 13 (2009)

From NetFlix:

After saving the president’s life, Secret Service agents Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) receive orders to report to a top-secret location. They soon discover that their new jobs entail guarding mystical items contained in Warehouse 13. They also must monitor unusual events all over the country and track down additional mysterious articles for government safekeeping in this supernatural action series.

This B-grade escapee from the SyFy channel is just mindless fun. Pete and Myka spend their time flirting and searching for dangerous artifacts. Some episodes are better than others, but for the most part I get hooked once the plot gets moving.

As of this writing, only season 1 is available on DVD.

OK for kids.

Call it acceptable escape or whatever, just tune out and enjoy.

I LOVE TRASH!

Avatar (2009)

From NetFlix:

Disabled Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) travels to planet Pandora to become an avatar, ingratiate himself with the natives and help Americans mine lucrative unobtainium. But he finds himself in an interstellar conflict after falling for Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). James Cameron writes and directs this Golden Globe-winning CGI odyssey that has broken box office records. Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang co-star.

To see this film in IMAX 3D is an unforgettable experience in sight and sound. After three hours of pounding sounds my ears were numb. Also after the three hours I was physically tired, probably from the tension and never ending fast action. Bt it was worth it. According to the Wikipedia article, work on the film started in 1994. I can appreciate why it took 15 years to produce. The amount of detailed graphics are overwhelming. It took a wonderful creative imagination to invent such a beautiful planet and amazing creatures.

As for the content, possibly less said the better. Gosh, in 2154 we nasty humans are treating the Na’Vi just the same way we treated the American Indians. Gosh aren’t American corporations greedy bastards ? Gosh aren’t U.S. Marines unfeeling brutes ? Gosh will Sigourney Weaver ever escape her “fighting strange monsters” pigeon hole ? And who on earth is Sam Worthington ?

Personally I wouldn’t mind a ride on one of those dragon critters.

OK for kids as long as you don’t mind them losing their hearing and having nightmares.

Surrogates (2009)

From NetFlix:

Based on Robert Venditti’s graphic novel of the same name, director Jonathan Mostow’s sci-fi thriller is set in a futuristic world in which humans hibernate at home while living their lives vicariously through robot surrogates. When a series of mysterious surrogate murders occurs, FBI agent Greer (Bruce Willis) ventures out into the world for the first time in years to investigate. Radha Mitchell and Ving Rhames co-star.

Easy to understand, clever digital effects, action sequences make this sci-fi suspense thriller fun to watch. But more importantly the film asks the question: Is it better to live your life through some physically perfect doll than to face your mortality and live a normal life ? Bruce Willis was lucky to get this part which he plays perfectly. When the film begins we see Willis looking really handsome and fit. It doesn’t take long to realize that we are seeing his young surrogate double. There are other surprises in store. You might call the plot predictable, but just the same I enjoyed watching this sci-fi yarn that lasts only 89 minutes.

Moon (2009)

From NetFlix:

As he nears the end of a lonely three-year stint on the moon base Sarang, astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) begins to hear and see strange things. It’s not long before Sam suspects that his employer — the conglomerate LUNAR — has other plans for him. Featuring Kevin Spacey as the voice of a robot, this sci-fi thriller also stars Matt Berry and Kaya Scodelario. The film was an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival.

Whereas District 9 (2009) was suspenseful, frantic and strewn with garbage and gore, “Moon” is suspenseful, quiet, slow-paced, thoughtful, thought provoking and thoroughly human. Both sci-fi films are original and as different from one another as night and day. To avoid spoiling the plot for you, I can only say it involves deceit on the part of an earth corporation, a “hal”-like moon station robot (“hal” was the robot in “2001”), and genuine and warm interaction between persons. There is blood and some minor scuffles but no gore or real violence. Even children can safely watch the movie (a rarity these days).

I could find no Wikipedia description, but I did find the following detailed spoiler.

If you watch the film, do not hesitate to put philosophical considerations in comments, even if they amount to spoilers.

IF!!! you like sci-fi you should not miss this refined, well-made film.

District 9 (2009)

From NetFlix:

When aliens land on Earth, global business conglomerate Multi-National United forces them into rigid containment zones where they are compelled to labor, even as MNU commandeers their otherworldly technology for profit. As tensions build between human and non-human races, a rogue agent leads a resistance movement against MNU’s ruthless consolidation of power. Neill Blomkamp directs this cinema verité-style sci-fi thriller.

As one of the more original sci-fi films I have ever seen, the best adjective for this film is FRANTIC. By using hand-held cameras the constant tension never lets up. Sharlto Copley (who is really from Johannesburg, South Africa) is the perfect choice for the honest, well-meaning pawn of the weapons manufacturers. He is jittery and always a giant bundle of nerves. At first I groaned because the “prawns” (aliens) just looked so stupid. But soon even they fit perfectly into this tale of military-industrial suppression.

Subtle this movie is NOT. In a way the film is one big action scene from beginning to end. In this respect it might remind you of a car chase B film. Therefore, to enjoy this adventure you must like science fiction, action films, bloodshed, violence, and noise. What more could you ask for ?

And tell me, what is going on in the last scene ? What exactly did happen ? In fact, if you want to read a detailed spoiler see wikipedia.

Star Trek (2009)

From NetFlix:

Capt. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his trusted team on the starship USS Enterprise boldly go where no man has gone before in this installment of Gene Roddenberry’s sci-fi franchise that follows the early days of the intergalactic adventurers. The crew includes Spock (Zachary Quinto), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg) and Sulu (John Cho). Eric Bana co-stars, and Leonard Nimoy appears as an older version of Spock.

As an old “Star Trek” fan and still adolescent at heart, I enjoyed much of the film. Sometimes the pseudo-scientific explanations of what was happening left me cold. And seen one battle in space is pretty much to have seen all of them. These days it seems fashionable to create “Origin of …” films. Granted I am getting older, but I do wish the young Captain James Kirk did not have a case of acne.

The best line of all was (say this loud and fast) “Are you out of your Vulcan mind ?”

Live well and prosper!

Sleep Dealer (2008)

From NetFlix:

In a futuristic yet not unfamiliar world, the lives of three strangers connect in surprising ways amid a backdrop of militarization, closed borders and an all-encompassing global technological network. At the center of this potent sci-fi tale (nominated for a Best First Feature Independent Spirit Award) are Memo (Luis Fernando Peña), a peasant displaced after his village is attacked; Luz, a writer (Leonor Varela) who plugs her brain into the net; and Rudy (Jacob Vargas), an American security company worker.

NetFlix suggested this rare find: a science fiction film that is Latino, quiet, sadly possible, and promotes human values especially the love of family. Subtitles accompany the easy and slow Spanish speech. There is some violence which because it is not gore hits close to home. It took me a while to understand the purpose of the “nodes”, but once I understood I was jolted because I now saw science fiction that could easily solve the “Mexican problem”. Could this impersonal form of voluntary slavery really happen ? Is the situation of today’s Latino immigrants any better ?

Children of Men (2006)

From NetFlix:

Play Preview Alfonso Cuaron directs this film version of P.D. James’s classic dystopian novel (and Oscar nominee for Best Adapted Screenplay), a futuristic drama set in a world in which humans have lost the ability to reproduce and subsequently face certain extinction. Things change when a single woman mysteriously becomes pregnant, prompting a conflicted government bureaucrat (Clive Owen) and his ex-wife (Julianne Moore) to join forces to protect her. Michael Caine co-stars.

I am a Clive Owen fan. However, his films really run the gamut from serious or derpressing to just plan stupid fun as in Shoot Em’ Up. (If you love trash, don’t miss this impossible shoot fest!)

“Children of Men” offers suspense, quasi sci-fi, and a depressing vision of the future. I can’t give away the ending, but it’s not a typical Hollywood ending. This film is worth seeing.

Torchwood (2006)

From NetFlix:

In this series that spun off from “Doctor Who,” policewoman Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) stumbles upon a secret organization known as Torchwood, a clandestine group led by the mysterious Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) that monitors alien activity on Earth. Cooper soon joins Harkness, tech expert Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori) and medic Owen Harper (Burn Gorman) in their quest to protect Earth from invasion.

OK all you kids out there, if you liked either “Doctor Who” or “Lost” or “X-Files” and are into a lot of sex (and some violence) this is a TV series for you. You don’t have to know anything about “Doctor Who”, you just need to have that mindset. Certain characters are straight and others are gay and some few seem not to have made up their minds just yet. Start with Season One and work your way through Season Two and Season Three.

Season One

Nothing more than acceptable trash, this TV series can still be fun to watch. To give you a taste of the kind of nonsense involved, consider: An alien has come to Earth in search of orgasmic energy (yes, that is correct). This alien enters the body of a young woman who then serially attracts male sex partners. But as each young man reaches climax he turns into a small pile of dust. In time there is a trail of small piles of dust. Heard enough ?

As I recall, the last disk (7?) of Season One is not episodes, but rather extra commentary. You might not want to waste a rental on this last disc.

Season Two

Every review I read says that Season Two is better and I agree. Some episodes are stupid. But for the most part the plots are clever and varied. More interesting is that mixed in with all the nonsense are valid situations applicable to real life. For example, the fiancee of one couple has to keep her membership in Torchwood secret from her boy friend. He feels neglected, etc. etc. Sound familiar ?

Torchwood actually kills its characters permanently. The joke (ahem, important feature), however, is that Jack Harkness is condemned to live forever young. Many episodes kill him in all sorts of diabolical ways and he just keeps coming back for more. You really don’t believe I am saying this, right ?

Besides, when have you ever been to a wedding in which the bride is unfortunately pregnant with an alien whose mother alien is at the wedding in disguise waiting to nab the baby alien ?

Season Three

Season Three is one long multi-part story “Children of the Earth”. Aliens have come to earth. These aliens truly can destroy the earth at their whim. We are defenseless. The aliens demand that we give them ten percent of all the children of the earth (never mind why – you have to watch the show). What do you suppose the British politicians do in such a desperate situation ? What would you do ?

——————————————————————————-

No one over the mental age of, say, 16 need apply. So why on earth am I watching this garbage ? That’s easy …

I LOVE TRASH !

The Invasion (2007)

From NetFlix:

In the process of researching a mysterious alien epidemic that’s changing the nature of human behavior, a Washington, D.C., psychiatrist (Nicole Kidman) learns that her son (Jackson Bond) might be the planet’s only hope for survival. Daniel Craig, Jeremy Northam and Veronica Cartwright round out the supporting cast in director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s supernatural thriller that’s tinged with political undercurrents.

If you look for this film in IMDB, you will see that its USA working title was “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”. Indeed it is a modernized remake with lots of scientific mumbo-jumbo. Car chases supply much of the palpable suspense, and I was indeed on the edge of my seat. The plot details are so different that you can enjoy this film no matter how much you remember of the several earlier (dare I say, better) versions. In some way Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and Jeremy Northam seem to have settled for a B-film and indulged in a bit of B-acting.

Enough with the snide comments. It was a fun roller-coaster ride.
