Chloe (2009)

From NetFlix:

Suspecting her husband, David (Liam Neeson), of infidelity, doctor Catherine (Julianne Moore) hires sexy escort Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) to seduce him and test his faithfulness. But as Catherine checks in on Chloe’s encounters with David, Chloe’s reports become increasingly lurid. Soon, the relationships between all three intensify in unexpected ways. Renowned filmmaker Atom Egoyan directs this psychological drama

Not until the middle of this erotic thriller did I begin to suspect the truth. In fact for much of the beginning I almost dismissed the film as a mediocre excuse for “talking dirty”. But I stayed the course thinking that Julianne Moore just does not do cheap films. Up to the very last seconds this film remains sexually ambivalent.

Amada Seyfried is deviously beautiful as the “other woman”. Every now and then I could almost mistake her for Scarlett Johanssen (which can also be spelled “Johansson”). In this film she is certainly not the wonderful girlfriend in Dear John (2010)

Worthy film or not ? I am not sure. Opinions welcome.

Brooklyn’s Finest (2009)

From NetFlix:

Antoine Fuqua directs this tense drama about three wildly different New York cops whose paths collide in a Brooklyn housing project, where each must make a decision that will change the course of their lives forever. Cynical, washed-up Eddie (Richard Gere) no longer cares about the job or the rules; cash-strapped Sal (Ethan Hawke) sees a shortcut to solvency; and Tango (Don Cheadle) is torn between conflicting loyalties. Ellen Barkin co-stars.

Grim is the word that comes to mind, in addition to violent, bloody, despairing, cynical, etc. The scenes switch rapidly and constantly among the three separate stories. Only one officer reaches anything resembling positive closure and I’m not telling. Instead of watching this film, why not go and hug someone you love ?

A Single Man (2009)

From NetFlix:

This stream-of-consciousness, 1960s-era drama centers on a day in the life of George Falconer (Colin Firth, in an Oscar-nominated role), an English-born, Los Angeles college professor reeling from the recent death of his lover of 16 years. Fashion designer Tom Ford makes his directoral debut with this luminous film, which is based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel. Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Ginnifer Goodwin, Lee Pace and Nicholas Hoult co-star.

Sadly quiet and understated day in the life of a man grieving for his dead lover of 16 years. Mixed in with a stream of memories is his careful (almost comical in one scene) planning for his suicide at day’s end.

Toward the end one of his students (probably gay) both provides a ray of light amid the darkness and tries to prevent the suicide. Forgive my scepticism, but isn’t that student a bit too mature for his age ? However his character does provide a sweetness to counter George’s despairing outlook.

Such a movie says that finally gay-themed films have matured to a stage where they can avoid cliches such as death from AIDS (the lover dies in a car accident), being closeted, effeminate men, etc. Critics seem to think that Colin Firth has made his mark in this production.

I will not even hint at the film’s perfect end.

Second Sight (1999)

From NetFlix:

In this absorbing BBC crime drama, Clive Owen stars as Det. Chief Inspector Ross Tanner, a no-nonsense cop who disdains anything but cold, hard evidence — until a rare eye disease forces him to reassess his sleuthing methods. As he tracks down a ruthless killer, Tanner makes a deal with his ambitious partner, Catherine Tully (Claire Skinner), to advance her career in exchange for helping him hide his deteriorating vision

Acorn TV streams two seasons of this tense and well-done TV series. Season two has to be the last because Det. Chief Inspector Ross Tanner can no longer function because of his failing eyesight.

Clive Owen is his usual aggressively driven self. His acting is riveting as he expresses his helpless anger at going blind (including the fact that he may soon not be able to see his young son who lives with the divorced mother).

Claire Skinner has been in a huge number of TV series. In fact, if you are looking for some TV series to watch, just look her up in IMDB.  She appears only in season one. She abruptly quits in season two and Tanner must rely on his best friend in the police force.

Incendiary (2008)

From NetFlix:

Director Sharon Maguire’s powerful drama stars Michelle Williams as an adulterous young housewife struggling to come to terms with the deaths of her husband and infant son after they’re killed in a terrorist bombing at a London soccer game. Crippled by grief, the widow seeks comfort through affairs with two men (Ewan McGregor and Matthew Macfadyen), inadvertently putting herself in the midst of a dangerous love triangle

Michelle Williams is the center and most of this film. Tangentially her orbit is touched by her husband, by Ewan McGregor, by Matthew Macfadyen, by the son of a terrorist, and most of all by her little boy. Here is an imperfect young woman victimized by an imperfect world inhabited by terrorists. Her story, her reactions, and her final “solution” are a creative set of imagined circumstances that are more or less plausible.

Toward the end of the film her non-acceptance fantasies continued, for me, a bit too long. Don’t expect a perfect ending.

Perfect Stranger (2007)

From NetFlix:

This thriller directed by James Foley stars Halle Berry as Ro, a woman who risks her life to discover the identity of a stranger lurking on the Internet who might hold the answers to her friend’s murder. As Ro digs deeper, she discovers a murky world of online deception peopled by the likes of Harrison Hill (Bruce Willis), a mysterious figure who could either be a friend or a foe. Giovanni Ribisi, Leigh Spofford and Jason Antoon also star

If you look up Giovanni Ribisi in IMDB you will find he has appeared in at least 80 productions. For me he stands out in this film as the most interesting character. He often plays a dark role.

Bruce Willis, I am happy to say, in this case succeeds by playing Bruce Willis. His collisions with Halle Berry are clever and tense.

Tell me if you guessed the surprise ending. Also pay attention to the last few seconds of the film and tell me what is going on (hint: “look through the window”).

The Gift (2000)

From NetFlix:

When the authorities find a drowned woman’s body, a small-town psychic (Cate Blanchett) starts having visions of who committed the murder, which means she’s the only one who can testify to what truly happened … and that she could be the killer’s next target. Giovanni Ribisi, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear co-star in this moody Sam Raimi thriller co-written by Billy Bob Thornton

For most of the film I was sure I knew who the killer was. I was wrong. Sam Raimi and Billy Bob Thornton tell a good story that pulls you into the troubled lives of just about every character. And what a set of characters it is:

  • Cate Blanchett carries the show.
  • Giovanni Ribisi most recently played “Parker Selfridge” in “Avatar”.
  • Keanu Reeves does a great job as a mean red-neck villain.
  • Greg Kinnear was the father in “Little Miss Sunshine”
  • Hilary Swank gets beaten up a lot by her vicious husband Keanu Reeves
  • Gary Cole appeared many times in “The Good Wife” as the ballistics expert
  • J.K. Simmons appears everywhere. He is the long-suffering boss of Kyra Sedgwick in “The Closer”.
  • Katie Holmes is Rachel from “The Dark Knight”

It’s hard to lose with a cast like that.

44 Inch Chest (2009)

From NetFlix:

After his wife, Liz (Joanne Whalley), cheats on him, gangster Colin Diamond (Ray Winstone) gets his revenge by enlisting his underworld pals to kidnap her hunky French lover (Melvil Poupaud) in the feature debut of director Malcolm Venville. Top British actors, including Ian McShane, John Hurt and Tom Wilkinson, round out the cast of the crime thriller, penned by the screenwriters of another memorable Winstone vehicle, Sexy Beast.

You will not see much actual violence in this film. You do see Colin punch his wife. You do see a bloodied French lover after a beating. But that is NOT the point of the film.

Colin and his pals are rough crooks. They spend most of their time using the same foul words over and over until it gets quite tiresome. Colin has that British accent in which “worth” sounds like “wurf”.

Talk, talk, talk. Possibly this was initially a play because it sounds that way. For the most part the film is a monologue delivered by Colin.

Basically the theme of the film is true love and its loss. More than that I will not say for fear of spoiling.

NOT for everyone. You might prefer a root canal.

Sea of Love (1989)

From NetFlix:

Lonely, burnt-out NYPD detective Frank Keller (Al Pacino, in a Golden Globe-nominated performance) is on the hunt for a serial killer who uses personal ads to attract potential victims in director Harold Becker’s taut, suspenseful thriller. Unfortunately, Frank falls hard for Helen (Ellen Barkin), the alluring top suspect in the case. Now, their white-hot attraction could save him — or kill him.

In every Al Pacino film I have seen, his personality is more or less the same: wisecracking tough guy. Although this film is no exception to that comment, the younger Al Pacino here is slightly softer, slightly more vulnerable. His paring with John Goodman works well. Catching the serial killer, while the central theme, is really secondary to Al Pacino’s dealing with his sad personal life. “Sea of Love” is as representative of any Pacino fiilm that I have seen, although he was excellent in Angels In America (2003).

Breaking Bad (2008)

From NetFlix:

Diagnosed with cancer and given only two years left to live, high school chemistry teacher Walter (Emmy winner Bryan Cranston) attempts to secure his family’s financial future by teaming up with his former student, Jesse (Aaron Paul), to produce and distribute the illegal drug meth. As Walter slowly builds his empire, his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), grows suspicious of his erratic behavior, and the DEA starts searching for the area’s new drug kingpin.

NetFlix offers 3 TV seasons of “Breaking Bad” which started in 2008. Put this TV series in the “outrageous situations” category, which at times makes the happenings hilarious and wildly unexpected.

You might not like the theme and the events. Just to warn you, I give examples from season 1:

  • A high school chemistry teacher manufactures an especially high grade of crystal meth. In reality that drug destroys many lives. So you have to accept this premise.
  • At one point two drug dealers threaten the lives of Walter and Jesse in their camper trailer/meth lab. Immediately Walter figures out an escape which seems to kill both drug dealers.
  • Actually one dies immediately. But Walter and Jesse capture the other wounded dealer and imprison him in a cellar.
  • They flip a coin. Heads must dissolve the dead dealer in hydroflouric acid. Tails must kill the remaining dealer.
  • The acid dissolve is actually funny.
  • The killing is a serious bit of drama

So you can see why you might not enjoy this series. For what it’s worth Walter and Jesse play their parts to perfection.
